help with mounting of ludwig rail consolette Last viewed: 6 seconds ago

Loading...

i have just purchased a new modern ludwig rail consolette

Ludwig Sliding Rail Single Tom Holder - 9.5mm L-Arm - LR2983MT

for a bass drum that had the diamond plate mount.

i have wrapped the drum in black oyster pearl finish

i want to mount the new consolette, is there a re mounting template or paper

guide that shows exactly where this should be mounted in relation to the keystone badge.

I think placement is key, and since this is a players kit of moderate value (i mean the diamond plate holes are still there) i just want to drill once, not twice

any suggestions? thanks

Guess you couldn't go wrong with the stock position pictured here...[Attachment: 54560]

I agree with mchair...that's a good stock position to drill. There isn't a template that I know of.

I saved that photo only because I'm doing the same thing... rewrapping a Transition badge bass and tom in BOP, and installing an Ludwig consolette. My 20" bass was originally virgin, but I drilled and installed a Rogers swivo mount (like Ringo) back in the '70s. Oh, the STUPID things we did when we were young!

Guys, I'm at work right now... but when I get home (around 4:00 p.m. CST), I can post exact meaurements if you like. I've recently built two custom kits that needed the exact Ludwig rail mount positioning, and I have a 60's Ludwig keystone 22" BD that I took the measurements from.

BTW -- I use a cloth tape measure (find in your wife's sewing kit) to take these measurements so that it stays with the round of the outside of the drum. I drill a small "pilot" hole right at the center point, then use the correct size speed bit to drill the hole. I drill about half-way through from the outside, then finish from the inside -- that way no splintering. Also, I normally drill the shell before I re-wrap (but that's not necessary). Oh yeah -- let the drill do the work (i.e., don't get impatient and force the drill through!!).

After wrap, I take the same speed bit and start drilling the wrap from the inside, enough to get the "pilot" hole through the wrap right in the center. Then use the speed bit to finish from the outside. Again, don't get impatient and in a hurry.

Hope that all made sense...

I can sure attest to this!!

I bought a new Ludwig Rock-Duo set (2 vigin 22" BDs) in the early 70s. The first "modification" on what was my "left" drum was to intall a FT leg bracket for use to hold what was a hoop-mount hihat stand bracket. Then the second one was to install a rail mount and cymbal holder on the other BD (aka, "down beat" set) for when we played in smaller venues. And I didn't even put it per specs... I installed the rail mount right on top (like the "Jazzette" set).

So... I had two virgin bass drums and ruined them both!

Two virgin basses ruined??!! Oh, the horror, the horror. Thanks for sharing that, Bill. I still feel sick when I look at my poor, mutilated Transition bass, but at least I'm not alone in my misery. Has anyone ever started a "Stupid things I've done" thread? I think it would be very entertaining.

And I drill shell holes the exact way you do. Gave up on holding the block of wood inside the shell to prevent splintering. Drilling in from both sides just made sense, and I even lock those little, drill bit stop rings onto the bit to ensure it doesn't go more than halfway through. We'll be watching for those spacing locations for the consolette. Thanks.

I don't know if there's ever been a thread for stupid things, but I have shared that story before.

With me, I never gave it a thought until I started working with vintage drums when I got laid off my cushy-paying job. I call it "stupid" now, but back then it was out of practicality for me. And as far as the FT leg bracket on the shell for the hihat mount, I never did understand why Ludwig didn't make that a factory option. I'll admit I thought it was cool, but in fact it was very practical. That Ludwig hoop-mount hihat bracket wasn't real heavy-duty, but taking it off the hoop and putting it on the shell helped that out quite a bit.

As for the other drum, it was practical and made sense at the time...

Oh well. I guess there's a LOT of things besides drums that if I could go back and change I would... but it's all part of LIFE.

Enough philosophy for the day, huh?

:)
