Help to ID/Value a Ludwig Snare

Loading...

Hi there. I am a very occasional poster, and that last time I posted was to find out some info about a kit I had bought. I have since sold it, but hung onto the snare. I have decided I am likely going to sell the snare too.

I was wondering if you guys could help me out again to ID it and give me some suggestions on value. I believe is a Ludwig Supraphonic Snare, and I think it might be from the 70's. I took some photos of it, if photos of any other parts of the drum would be useful let me know and I will post them.

It's been kept in a case for as long as I have owned it (about 10 years). It's in perfect shape except for that it looks like it could use a polishing. I am not sure how exactly you measure snares, but it's depth is 7" from rim to rim, and it's 14" diameter.

Thanks for any help.

Hi There.

Beautiful drum. You are correct: It is a Ludwig Supraphonic, and the blue and olive badge dates it back to the 70s.

Judging from a couple of ebay options, your can probably expect to get AT LEAST $200 for it. I think that's on the low side, though.

Good luck!

It looks like a 6-1/2" depth shell. Is that correct? If so, then it's worth even more -especially to Bonham fans! $300-400 is more likely the value....maybe even more!

Thanks for the input so far guys. I don't know much about measuring drums, but I am pretty sure you are correct that is is 6.5. I measured it from the top of the top rim, to the bottom of the bottom and got 7". So I am guessing that would mean it's 6.5 from skin to skin?

The story behind the drums is pretty interesting. When I was in highschool (about 1994) I was at a garage sale an old lady was having. She took me down to the basement after I mentioned I was a musician and asked if I wanted to buy her late husbands drums drums. It was a set of 1962 Ludwig shells, all beautiful old Zildjian cymbals and this snare. There was also a box of Ludwig catalogs from the 60's, cases, and nice old brass cowbells. All for $200!

I am a mainly guitar player, and when I moved to a new smaller house a few years ago, I had to sell the drums as I am just a casual drum player and my vintage guitar gear took priority. But as you can imagine I gotten well over 10 times my investment back in these drums though. The cymbals alone sold for over $200 each.

I held onto the snare for a long time, but I decided it's time to let it go as well. When I had that whole kit, I was in a huge house with my parents still. I can't imagine ever being in the position to be able to own a kit again.
