Help pricing my 1970s Gretsch Last viewed: 2 days ago

Here are my details for the drums.

They have some scratches, a little pitting, the 13 inch has a top ring that needs a little love, the original tom holder was replaced with a slingerland, and the bass drum has one tension rod that isn't original. Overall, their condition is quite excellent. The inside tags are orange/yellow, and the inside of the drums are silver (this is a jasper shell thing?). Also, note the 16 has that non-standard ebony stain. That drum alone may be as valuable as the whole kit on it's own. I saw a 14 go for $1500 in this model. I'm not sure at all:

Size, model, and serial.

22, 4247, 40425

12, 4415, 40376

13, 4416, 40485

16, 4418, 40765

18, 4419, 46251

I am quite certain these drums are listed in the 1977 catalog on pages 6, 7, and 8. The model descriptions are accurate.

That said, it seems serial numbers are really hard to confirm.

I would really appreciate anyone's opinion on their value, or the range, given that one would need to examine them closely to be sure. Would I do better just selling them one at a time? That seems criminal. I'm in Canada, Ontario. I have some of the original heads, including the bass drum head.

Photos in the next post. Cheers!

Can nobody give me even a vague sense of what these might be worth? $1000, $2000, $3000? I might swap them for some more portable Rogers really soon, but I'm not sure what I'd be giving up...

I could use the help! I guess I'll search around on the forum.

I'd say between 1000-1500. The 16" is a different color so maybe sell that separate.

Wish the pictures were brighter. Love the kit and finish (I"m biased, as I have a everything you have there, drum-wise, except that seemingly rare, damned 12" tom; there is currently a 12-incher on ebay listed for $400.00.)

That said, I'd like to wish that what you have there, would be worth $1,500.00 to $2,000.00. Again, I can't really see the finish on all the pieces, but if in VG condish, that would be my appraisal. Maybe just keep them and play them. Or, sell them and give me your 12" tom as an appraisal fee (?) :-)

Best of luck.

Thanks a lot guys!! This will help me make a call. I will certainly be in touch if I sell these one by one. The 12 sounds the best to me out of all of them!

You can see why I'm a bit confused: $400 for the 12? Then shouldn't I get proportionally more for the bigger drums? (I know, supply/demand), but the concept is a bit baffling in this case.

Here are some better photos. Sorry, my camera is crap and I don't exactly have great lighting.

Wow. I coudn't see the FT color difference, in the other pics. That's a big difference. You have a 5-piece with non-Gretsch tom-mounts, and an orphan FT. The mounts might detract from value, depending on the buyer. Still a nice kit, in my book, and probably in the $1,000.00 to $1,200.00 range for the 22/12/13/18 and who knows for the 16"FT. The color seems odd for the period.

Just my take.

Yes, on stage, or in dim lighting, it's hard to catch the difference. In the kitchen with the flash on, the difference is more dramatic than real life. It is an unusual finish, but, it is an option on the back of the 77 catalog. Here is another kit posted recently (bet you saw it) with the same look:

Thanks again for the feedback. I'll reply with a photo of my new Rogers if I get it.

Hi everybody,

Thanks once again for all your help. It was a quick deal as we are moving!

Will Huston has the drums now in Port Hope, bigsounddrums@hotmail.com

We worked out a deal, and while I didn't come out way ahead, I feel like I've got something practical and perfect for my needs, and I didn't just channel it into some corp.

He's got that 12" and 16" now, isn't a huge fan of Gretsch, but his favorite was the 18". If I had an ebay account, a paypal account, the time, the store, the space, the skills, the patience, the money, maybe I could have held out and fixed them all up.

Check out what I got! 16 isn't a perfect match but pretty close! Dayton drums, sounding huge.

Cheers,

Andrew
