Help on Slingerland finish

Loading...

I've been asking various questions on this new kit I purchased...and I appreciate the help. Is there anyone who may care to take a shot at what official finish these drums are? If I know the exact finish "name" it'll help me with dating them (and I just am an information freak on my equipment :) ) I included a second pick of a set-up kit I found that appears to be the same finish.

Thanks for the help!!

Hi,

In 1979 Slingerland came out with several lacquer and oil finishes that appear extremely close to what you've got on your kit. Among the choices were Cherrywood Lacquer, Cherrywood Oil, Oakwood Lacquer, Oakwood Oil, Rosewood Lacquer, Rosewood Oil and Teakwood Lacquer and Teakwood Oil. I'd be quite surprised if your kit doesn't fall within the 1979 time-frame. If you'd like to take a look at the finishes, they're featured on Page 139 of Rob Cook's publication, entitled "The Slingerland Book."

You didn't mention which Slingerland Badge is on your drums. This would also help indicate the age of the kit.Walking

They have the '70's to early '80's black/silver Niles badges. I tell you - I thought he same...I looked at the page from the '79 catalog of the finishes that is on the web and I didn't see any that matched exactly....

I need to get my hands on that book and see......I don't believe the "finish page" I looked at had quite so many choices as you mentioned...

Thanks a million for the response......

Russell

Do you have the drums yet?

Photos are not the best way to determine color. Unless the photos were professional taken colors in photos change depending on the type of lighting. Also remember with most finishes depending on how they were stored and what conditions in regards to sunlight the drums were subject to will also change the color of the finish. Natural aging also changes color richness in some woods

I think the 79 set of swatches is pretty accurate and until you have the drums in hand in natural light you will not be able to say for sure exactly

what the finish is.

I'll agree with that...I held the photo right next to the drums again today really looking hard and long and there were one or two that begged to be the same but were just a "tad" off so to speak - some in color and some because of the reflection in the photo of the finish. That "Cherrywood Lacquer" is just a hair off to my eye. Who knows if that "honey" look the the drums have to them isn't just fade as well?

I get them on Saturday and have a band practice Saturday night...I'm frothing at the thought. Keep on Pl

I can't wait to get them and check which shells they are as well - and try and figure which heads are best, etc.

I'll post some closer pics when I get them together - won't be soon enough for me...

Thanks for the help....
