Help! Old Ludwig strainer...Modified?

Loading...

I have a Ludwig Pioneer snare, pre-serial # that I am bringing back to life. It has a date stamp that appears to be Dec 20, 1961. The snare has 6-lugs and the strainer is throwing me off a bit. It is rusted out and I may want to replace it with an exact same one or try to find the facepiece that is rusted and only replace that. The issue is, I can't seem to find any pictures of this one with the same parts. The ones I see with the small throw arm all have the 12-hole part that slides inside the fixed piece. Even my 1958 WFL has the similar body but a long throw arm. This one is different, or appears to be to me. I have not seen one like this Any help guys?

That strainer is legit and usually shows up on '61 drums. Ludwig used parts of a couple strainers to create that one. They did not like to waste stuff!. It is actually called a P85 Large Pioneer strainer. Most people think of the P85 that came out in the very late 60's and is still made today. But yours was prior to that. They have the same hole pattern as the Ludwig P83 strainer and a few others as well. Here is an image from the '62 Ludwig Catalog showing your strainer. Hope this helps.

No problem. Glad to help. I think the bottom part that you want to replace is the same for the P83 strainers, which are common. I would soak yours in Dawn and water overnight. You'll be surprised at how much better it will look.

Here is a pic of the same strainer on my '61 Galaxy Pioneer.

Take those Jesus clips off and the whole thing will come apart. Put it up to a wheel, it will come clean. wax it, knock off the corners on the block slide and it will work and look fine.

The reverse to reassemble.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Thanks OB

I soaked it in Dawn overnight

Then CLR for a few hours (that actually cleaned up the rusty and tarnished Lug screws and washers on the inside of the drum)

Then hit it with Mothers Mag Polish and it still looks like a rusty slide.

Will take it to the buffing wheel when i am back at my CT home.

If that doesn't work keep an eye out for a Wanted post to replace this one.
