Help! Mysteriously sized mounted tom

Loading...

I'm working on restoring my grandfather's old John Grey & Sons Broadway kit. It was in an attic for about 35 years. I don't have any experience with drums and am having trouble replacing the head of the mounted tom drum.

Here's the issue I need help with -

I need to replace the head on the mounted tom. I ordered a 12" replacement because the original John Grey Catalog lists the tom as 12"

here's an image from the catalog page

http://imgur.com/a/OnZ73

The 12" new head didn't fit. When I measured the shell from outside edge to outside edge, it came to exactly 29.5cm, that's 11.61".

Next, I measured the old original head. It too is about 11.6"

So my first question is: why is my mounted tom such a strange size?

and my more important question: what do I do about replacing the head?

I'd appreciate any info, help, or explanations. I'm a total novice .

[EDIT: UPDATE}

I remeasured the original head from rim to rim, it is 12", so I measured it wrong above.

The new 12" head will not fit in the hoop, but the old one does. I'm guessing the problem is with the hoop rather than the shell size.

The page says your tom toms take white heads on moulded flesh hoops, and the toms take white heads on wood flesh hoops !!

Thanks for that info about the white head with fleshoops. I guess the plastic batter head that I removed was not the original head.

However, on the resonant head, which is the original (has the John Grey Headmaster logo), the head is plastic with a metal head too. The chrome die-cast hoops seem to be the same size (interchangeable).

The rim on the new Remo heads is definately a thicker piece of metal than the ones that i took off the drum.

So my next question is, what do I do about replacing this head? Where can I find something that will fit on here?

There are a few members on hear that know all the in`s and out`s and where`s about custom skins !!

Technically the skin is attached to the hoop, and the tension hoop is the metal hoop that the screws go through to tighten the head. Today we got plastic heads and call the tension hoop the hoop and the hoop the headring !! If that makes sense !!

Keep checking the thread, it takes a few !! Someone will know where. I know that Remo will make what you want but only once a year !!

So you`re haveing trouble getting the plastic head inside the metal tension hoop....Right ?? Because the aluminum ring is to thick for the flange...Correct !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Oddball,

Yes. Thanks. That's exactly what the issue is. There was also a suggestion on my other post that the drum size is metric rather than in inches.

Where do I go from here?

Well that`s easy,...the tape measure don`t lie,..you can however hold it in the wrong place !!

A good tape will have US standard on one edge and metric on the other edge !!

Tape the drum at 12:00/6:00 and 3:00/9:00 and you can`t mis measure !! When measuring, turn the tape back and fourth about an inch each way, the longest number is the size.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

You will have to measure the inside DI of the tension hoop as well, not the opening, but the flange that bends out and then down !!

Your drum sounds like a Metic size head..Remo still makes Metic heads...I would check with them...Mikey

Bring your John Grey rim to the drum store and check a bunch of different brands of heads.Does the head fit on the DRUM correctly?I mean without the rim,or is it very loose?I've never owned a pre-international drum-I've heard that the p/i 12" is between 11 1/2"+ 12",which would confirm it is a metric drum.Remo stocks metric Ambassadors and Black dots-give em'a shout!
