Help me date my Ludwig drums

Loading...

I have a Ludwig Big Beat 5 piece kit that was bought new from a local music shop in 1981.

The toms, floor tom and bass drum all have pointy blue and olive badges and the bass drum has the thin metal spurs. The serial numbers range from 1792038 through to 1850023.

The Supraphonic snare has the rounded blue and olive badge and serial number 2140851.

Whilst my kit was purchased in 1981 I appreciate that it may have taken some time to reach the UK and may have stood in the shop for some time.

I am becoming increasingly curious as to it's year of origin and the online information I have seen so far does not assist me with those serial numbers.

What kind of shells, 3ply or 6ply? Some pictures may help determing it's true age.

Pretty sure they're 6 ply with blue cortex wrap.

I would guess 1980.

I bought a second 26" bass drum (virgin) for my kit on January 12, 1980. It is a 6-ply shell but has a pointy B/O badge, number is 1785770. I would assume this drum was manufactured sometime in 1979. It was on the sales floor of a music store, so I'm not sure if it originated as a special order for another drummer or it was subtracted from a larger kit.

Also I order a couple of additional toms on June 6, 1981, these were 6-ply shells with rounded B/O badges (2243195/2243205). So these were definitely manufactured in the summer of '81 and thus have the rounded B/O badges.

So, Ludwig six-ply shells started to be manufactured sometime in 1976, and pointy badges got replaced by rounded ones sometime in 1979. Therefore, my toms are consistent with other drums from the 6-ply era (6-ply with rounded B/O badges).

However, my bass drum is a most likely one of those transitionally badged shells or it's slightly older than I think it is (possibly manufactured in '78 and sitting longer than I thought - though I don't recall it in the store I frequented during that time).

I would definitely pull a couple of drum heads (if you're not using clear heads) and check to see whether or not you've got 3 or 6 ply shells - it's 99.99% probable they are 6-ply, but what the heck, sometimes ya just never know with Ludwig.

I have clear heads and they're definitely not 3 ply. Thanks for the interesting information. Does your bass drum have the older thin spurs?

BTW my bass drum is 1792038.

From 80s Big Beat

Our numbers aren't that far off! It may be that Ludwig was still using up all the old badges at the time and your kit was one of the lucky ones (or unlucky if they've been bent!) that got the remain pointy badges.

Yes, my bass does have the thinner 1/4" retracting spurs (#1306) not the thicker 1/2" ones (#1308). By 1981 the 1/2" spurs are the only ones shown in the Ludwig product catalog and on the pictured sets (although I'm sure you could special order the 1/4").

Does your Big Beat kit feature the "Double Ratchet Tom Holder" (#781) or the thicker "Modular" style (#3002) that started to appear around that time? Ludwig offered both toms of mounts for a good number of years. It doesn't really help us date the kit any better, but just curious to know if the owner mixed thinner spurs with heavier tom mounts.

My kit has both the 1/4" spurs and the older double ratchet tom holder. Fortunately, my pointy badges have remained unscathed as has the kit in general. I'm currently getting the top hoop of the snare rechromed as it has lost some chrome but aside from a little pitting the shell is in good order. I am missing one of the rubber feet from the spurs and my hex spanner has been missing for some time (I'm tryng rather unsuccessfully to track down replacements). But other than that it's barely any different to when it was new.

I'll dig out some pics soon.
