Help identifying drums -- Japanese?

Loading...

These drums are basketcases, but belonged to my husband's brother, so have sentimental value to the family. As the only drummer in the family, they've come to me for use/safekeeping. I don't have a lot of vintage drum knowledge, but these look like older Japanese drums. I have no delusions of grandeur -- just trying to see if it is worth cobbling them back together to use as a practice set, or if I should just stack them in a closet until (I can only hope) a drummer pops up in the next generation.

They appear to be 5-ply, with the interior layer running rim-to-rim. The Ludwig tom mount is a poorly-installed modification, as are the Ludwig mounts on the toms. The BD spurs (one is missing) are straight, retractable, and appear to be original. The leg mounts on the floor tom are stamped "JAPAN", and also appear to be original. The wing nuts on the BD spurs match those on the FT leg mounts.

There are no badges. There are no markings inside any of the shells, or on the BD hoops (metal). The vent holes have simple metal insert rings. The lugs are not of a good quality metal.

Oh, and they reek of cigarette smoke, but that's just a bonus.

14 x 22 BD, 10-lug

15 x 16 FT, 8-lug

9 x 13 MT, 6-lug

8 x 12 MT, 6-lug

Can you make the pics bigger? From what I can recognize, it's more Pearl-ish than coming from Star (now: Tama).

I would build it up again, as it may sound not too bad and the finish appears to be unfaded and still nice to look at.

I had some concert toms once that I thought were faded yellow. Turned out to be smoke. Looking at the pictures its hard to tell what the finish is. Is it silver sparkle or champaign? Its too bad somone had to put different mounts on them. I would get some 409 or something and clean that smoke off, you will be suprised how nice they can look. Try it out and post another picture please.

Thanks. I thought those pics were clickable thumbnails, but I see they're not. I'll post some bigger pics shortly when I can get to a computer.

The wrap seems lighter than champagne sparkle, but not white sparkle. If it was champagne, it has faded very evenly. If white, it has darkened evenly. It doesn't really have any red/pink to it that I would expect if champagne. It does have some discoloration-- mold or mildew? I'll clean one up and get some bigger pics posted.

To me the set looks silver sparkle to me.The set also looks to be a mid 70's set made by Pearl. But would not have a pearl name badge on the set.Pearl used about 50 or so names on drums that they sold all around the world...Mikey

Thanks, Mikey.

They do seem to be '70s Pearls. I tried to clean one of them up, but the yellowing is here to stay, it appears. They're in just awful shape, but I know he gigged with them a lot. He got offered a tour with Willie Nelson back in the '80s, but turned it down. I can't imagine these are the only drums he had, but they are the only ones that are still around. The drums mean a lot to my husband, so I think I'm going to get them back in playing shape and try to use them as a practice set here at home. Or if I like them enough, I'll swap them with another set I have in our rehearsal space.

They do look like Silver Sparkle for that era of MIJ. I had the same wrap and it does not even return to "silver" with sanding. Take off a lug or mount and see if its more telling. It won't likey be perfect but sill be lighter colored.

They sound sweet with a little work.
