The local music store has this guy contact me to appraise his fathers kit. I tell the guy over the phone that I am a collector not an appraisor. He wants to know some history and price on his dads drums So I go to look at them and he tells me they are from the 50-60's. He remebers sitting on them in the early 60's. The drums are in decent condition, only the floor tom has peeling wrap, very few marks on the wrap. The all have hardshell cases(look old with leather straops), 60's zildjian cymbals and stands that I did not see. I don't know anything about MIJ drums, the lugs look MIJ and the inside ply has vertical wood grain. There are no badges and the grommet has a strange look on the inside. There is a small area below the badge that looks like it had a badge, the are where the badge would have been is about 2 inches long and maybe 1/4' high. Seems to be 6 ply and the blue sparkle wrap is darker than what a Ludwig blue sparkle would be. The rims have an engraving that says Taiwan. He is looking for some kind of history on the drums, can anyone help with info

Now here's a guy who knows about posting pics. Good job. From what I can tell this kit appears to be an early 70s era Pearl, or Pearl stencil kit. Definitely not 50s, or 60s. Pretty common MIJ luan shell kit with common wrap and very little collector value. If it were badged, and all the mounting hardware present I suggest you still may have trouble getting any more than $200 restored. Just one opinion.

I second everything DaddyNowhere says. Definitely 70s. I had a kit just like them. Worst Luan I've ever seen in a kit, actually. You could pick out chunks of the wood with your fingernails if you dug them in.

DaddyNowhere and DrumOgre are right.

Pearl started to use those tom mounts 1969 and the stencil kits didnt get them until a couple of years later.

I am pretty shure that these are Taiwan made stencils from early to mid 70's.

Bass drum only has 6 lugs, and on the lever on the throw off on the snare, you can clearly read "Made in Taiwan". I am pretty sure this goes for the rest of the kit as well.

Every one above is on the money... This is a standard 70's Pearl stencil kit. The Taiwan stampings and the mundane wrap mean that it's pretty much uninteresting junk, IMHO. I've sold a number of these kits for around $100 to $150 with new heads, junk, but shiny cymbals and light hardware. They indeed do make kids happy, though. These are great sets to learn on.

I'm not sure about all areas of California, but here, in the middle, I wouldn't pay more than fifty bucks for these. The cymbals / hardware are, of course, another story depending on what they are.

HA! If you go back with numbers like these, I'll bet the guy never asks you to do another appraisal!

The owner of the drums have been watching too many TV shows where people find things in the garage that are worth a fortune. I already told them that just because they are old drums it doesn't mean they are valuable. I knew they were MIJ and told him that they were. I think they have more sentimental value than anything. Thanks for all the info you guys.

All the boyz are correct.

They are MIT and definitely from the 70's.

Most likely Maxwins, Tempros or Royce.

I just restored an almost identical kit.

Vintage..........but not valuable vintage, although they can sound great with some work.
