Help ID Yamaha(60-70’s?) steel snare

Hello guys.

First i want to thank for the great forum. I have watched so many cool drums, found info that im looking and so on.

Anyway, now im in a need if help.

I bought this snare few days ago but just cant find out what it is.

I tried magnet on it, and it sticks to it so im sure that it is steel.

Also on one pic you can see that there was badge which has been ripped of, but lines are still visible and it looks like 70’s or nippon Gakki.

There are 8 lugs on snare, and i think its 14” and maybe 6.5” deep (havent measured yet)

Lugs also have nice springy and sturdy feeling.

There is no visible markings etc. And i have tried to watch catalogs but havent found same kind of snare.

So help is really appreciated here.

Looks like a Yamaha badge but I’ve never seen a 6-1/2 from this era.

Lugs appear to be Pearl to me.

Finally, Yamaha steel shells were seamless but I’m not sure when that began.

I think this may be an “end user custom” but can’t confirm that.

Yeah. I looked too , that lugs look same as pearl lugs.

Well, i found it for 10 euros, so not bad. I tried the shell sound of it and its actually very low.

Would be fun to see super early yamaha catalogs but they seem to be super hard to find. I also thought, that could this be something like ”only for europe” etc. Thing? Wouldn’t be first time when we see that kind of thing with companys. I hate that. Allways there is something cool, what i want and then there is somewhere reading ”only for US markets”

I have a copy of an early catalogue but not handy...

I also have the SDM5 with my D20 kit as reference. A euro only deep snare, and also the possibility of a concert snare drum not in the regular catalogue. (By the way, their current concert snares are phenomenal).

Another possibility is that it’s not even a Yamaha shell and was simply assembled with what was on hand and the badge was attached. I don’t know enough about the early kits other than my D20 research for my restoration. The early catalogue may be posted on the site too...

True that.

To me, the shell looks tama shell, lugs pearl, and that stain, where badge was has that yamaha type look.

I took the lugs of and there was first stamps i found. Only numbers 1 & 2 :D

I think that im cleaning it up, do some custom paintings.

Growing up in the 80’s I saw (and owned) my fair share of “unknown” drums but I’ve never heard of these.

Those lug casings are clearly Pearl stencil ones however. Those I know intimately.

Build it up and see how it sounds!
