Hello and help needed on drum wrap splicing! Last viewed: 2 hours ago

This is a great site !! I have read most of the posts regarding restoring vintage drums but,did not come across this question.

I have a wartime Radio King bass which had a metal plate screwed to it.The plate took up a whole panel on a 26" drum and was scrwed down with 18 ,count em , 18 bolts!

I have another R.K. drum approx. the same age and finish (wmp) which had damaged wrap. My plan is to salvage a scrap from this drum and cut the swiss cheesed piece out and glue a new piece in.

The problem is,the old wrap on the bass is impossible to slice into ,even with a new blade in my utility knife. Any ideas or suggestions?

There are a few extra holes on other parts of the drum where I would also like to splice in a new piece. I have seen it done on drums listed on E bay, just can't figure how to do so myself!

Another consideration is not leaving a gap between the original and the replacement wraps (if and when I do cut out the damaged section).

I am almost tempted to glue the replacement wrap OVER the original at this point.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I'm sure as this restoration progresses, I'll have plenty more questions !

I would probably set up a straight edge, clamp it and then cut it with a

dremmel.

This sounds like an interesting project and I would like to see some before and after pictures.

Thanks for the reply David. I guess it's time to head to Home Depot! I'll try to get some pics too, glad you suggested it!

I actually want to remove a large rectangular piece but leave approx one inch at each bearing edge. If I can't get the new piece to fit exact,I may have to use some laminate fill they make for counter tops. I saw it in a close match to faded wmp.

My main concern is that the replacement wrap is over 50 years old and brittle so,cutting it is a bit tricky.
