Heads for a Sonor Phonic kit

Loading...

Hello, everyone. I am getting ready to do a complete head replacement on my 80's Phonics kit, and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions as to which heads I should use. Head selection is by far my weakest point when it comes to drums, so ANY help would be so greatly appreciated.

Right now, I am using REMO Pinstripes for batter, and coated Ambassadors for resos (only on toms), just because I replaced what was on the kit when I bought them, and the drums boom like a cannon when I hit them.

Ive been reading up on different combos, and what type of sound they would produce, but I have yet to find a good combo for a 9 ply beech drum. Like I said, if anyone has any suggestions, they would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, everyone.

I have spent a little time on an 80,s Phonic kit and detailed for a Friend,He had clear emps top and clear amb resos tuned low,and they sounded decent, but when I detailed the kit I tried clear ambs on the 12,and it still had plenty of low end but I liked that it was livelier and more responsive. Those 9 ply shells have plenty of bottom end,and because they are thick and straight sided they seem to really take on the sound of the heads used,if you read the sound description on a coated amb,you should get that sound on the sonor toms. The phonics to me are clean sounding drums,You might try some clear single ply resos and throw the coated ambs on top for a little color.
