Heads for 60's Greatsch set

Loading...

Hi everyone, this is my first post here !

I got a 60's Gretsch kit(20,12,14) recently, and I'm planning to change drum heads.

I tried Aquarian American Vintage before, but I didn't fit to my drums.

Actually my kit has AV heads on it now, but I needed to push a head really strong against drums.

So, I think I saw the post that says you can cut a slit into Remo or whatever heads to make it fit to old drums.

But I don't see exacly how to do it.

Anyone can explain it to me maybe with pictures ??

Thank you !

I wouldn't go cutting a perfectly good drumhead to fit a drum. Why don't you take one of your drums to a music store and try different heads? That way you know what fits and won't waste any money

Yes, great idea. I had that problem some years ago and at the time Ludwig heads were JUST a bit bigger and corrected the problem.

If you don't have a completely satisfying solution, I know that Remo will make any special size you need. The only problem is finding a store that will help you get it done. Most stores will simply tell you it CAN'T be done because it's a big hassle and they can only charge you for the next size up (a 12 and 1/4 head will be charged as a 13). They give you a special number so you can reorder another one without all the preliminary setup hassle.

I'm not sure if the situation has changed however as it was QUITE a long time ago that I got it done. Fortunately I have a personal friend that owns a music store and at the time I did it he was willing to go through the hassle for me to get it done.

From what I've heard, you just take a head and saw a slit or two in the metal hoop. Try it with a used head first and see if it works.

Thanks guys !

There's no music store that has decent heads selection around my area. And I doubt if they would let me try different heads.. But yeah, I should give it a try.

Special size from REMO.. That's interensting ! I'll ask import agent of REMO about it.

Just saw a slit.. For me it seems really tough to cut a slit in the metal hoop. Anyway I'll try !

I've never heard of that as a solution until now. Ingenious!

I'm not sure how this solution would work for the longevity of the drumhead, but a Dremel tool would work very well to precision cut the metal hoop on the head. It would give you the control you need to be sure to not cut TOO deeply. It would also afford a very CLEAN cut as opposed to a hacksaw.
