So I got the itch to put some 2 ply skins on my 9/72 Rogers after having used coated Ambassadors for last few years. Originally thinking about trying clear Emperors (having liked them on other drums before) but the Suede Emperors got my attention too. Anyone have experience witht the Suedes??

Remo's site says they're 2 ply 7.5mil heads, like the Vintage Emps which I do not care for. I feel that due to the added weight, compared to the regular coated Emps, they need to be tensioned higher, making a harder playing surface....I dunno, I just don't like em. I went to the music store to "tap test" the Suedes against regular and Vintage Emps and they certainly seem more open than the Vintage but a little thicker than the regulars.

I do not seem to like the Vintage line of Remo's. I got a bad Vintage A once for my 12" on the 9/72. The bottom ply did not tune correctly and stayed rippled in one area, visible by looking through my clear reso, creating a very dead sound which went away once I went back to the regular A's.

Can anyone confirm whether these Vintage heads are true to an older design, and from when, 50s, 60s?

To answer your last question NO ! I have a set of original plastic rim emperor remo heads, they are 100% different than the new modern remo heads.

Different than the new "Vintage" Emperors? WTF is Remo basing these models on then?

The epa you can thank, remo doesn't can't use the plastic and coating they originally used from their original heads. there is a huge sound and feel difference in them also.

You should check out Aquarian heads.

I've use the Performance 2 with power dots on my '73 kit. They can be tuned super low. Like Pinstripes, only better IMO.

I also use the coated Response 2's on my XP-8s.

They also have a Vintage series (2 actually) that I've read good things about. There are video clips of most of their heads on their website.

Aquarians sound like they are already in tune right out of the box - the "tap test' as you described.

I also use the High Velocity snare head.
