Head Combination For Vintage Snare?

Has anyone here found the perfect combination of heads for a Gretsch late

50's 3ply snare drum?

I'm having trouble stopping the drum from buzzing........a very annoying buz - and loud. It calms down a bit if I detune the reso head.

I have an Evans Hazy 300 reso and I did have a calfhead on the batter side. I have an Evans G1 coated - used but very good still - on it now. I've changed the snares a few times and the snare strings too. I have some old

'white plastic' strips on there now. I was using some puresound string. But - still buzzing to no end.

Any ideas??

Oh yes - and the bearing edges are very good - like new - so that's not the problem.

Could it be the STICK-CHOPPER hoops??? I'll have to look at that - just thought of it. If they're really bent out of shape maybe they're not allowing the head to come in contact with the shell properly.......you think??

Thoughts??

hmmm have you checked the snare beds?

It could be those, I assume the bearing edge is original?

this will help you - http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/id8.html

Thanks JWG

I should have looked at this first - I printed it off about 3 years ago - and forgot I had it - haha. I'll sit down tonight and try all these suggestions from "the Bible,"

The bearing edges were redone and they're excellent - the snare beds seem to be good too. Ray Ayotte wants to have a look at it for me - so one of these days when I'm over in Richmond I'll pop by his shop - that's if I can't figure this out on my own. If he can't get it up-n-running no one can.

And Kevins - yes - the lugs have springs in them, but the buzzing isn't that in this case. In fact, when I restored these (all four drums in the shellpack) I put those little pieces of felt in behind each spring - just to eliminate the possibility of 'rattling springs." Thanks.

Cool Daddy-O !!

The only lug without a felt turned out to be the culprit on a Slingy snare of mine

once, so, just "running it up the flagpole".

Curious situation, hope you get it figured out.
