Hi all -
I've got a couple of Haymans (13X9, 20X14) here that have been sitting in my collection for a few years now in the hopes I'd stumble across a decently priced floor tom, but that has yet to happen.
I got these two drums a number of years back from a gent who is the "foremost orchestral transcriber of Zappa music" in the world (not sure what the competition is for that). Anyhow, he'd acquired them as a 3-piece (losing the floor tom along the way somewhere), having been told that they'd been used by Ainsley Dunbar when he recorded with Zappa. Now, I have no documentation of this whatsoever, and I don't know that this would add any value. But interesting to me nonetheless as I'm not a huge Zappa guy, but do love Bowie, who Dunbar also played Haymans with.
Anyhow, the poor drums had their wraps stripped off decades ago - luckily with no shell damage - and were then painted in this hideous light-smurf color. Lugs and tom hoops are all in very good shape chrome-wise; the knuckle-cruncher tom mount is fully functional and losing some chrome. Bass hoops are structurally sound but are missing the inlay, and the "Vibrasonic" coatings (heavy white/cream paint, like 60s Ludwig interiors) have started to craze.
I'm debating between trying to move these as-is, or stripping the smurf paint off and either doing a clear coat -- depending on the look of the wood -- for a bit of a Camco look, or at least recovering and holding onto them.
Would love some ideas as to value of the drums as-is, if the possible history would have any bearing on an asking price, and any tips/ideas for refinishing.
Thanks!
