Hayman Drums

Hi

I've bought a set of shells on eBay which are claimed to be Haymans and I have a simple question for the Hayman experts out there...

Does anyone know for sure whether or not ALL Hayman [wood] shells were finished with the iconic white Vibrasonic paint - or were there ever Hayman shells with plain unpainted insides?

All informed info is welcomed. Thanks.

Well I don't know for sure and there may be others more informed but I have never seen any unpainted shells. It was their party trick, if you like, so I would assume all shells got the treatment. There was an MIT Hayman kit introduced in the 80s which may have unpainted interiors. Do you have any photos?

Thanks, Andrew

Photos attached of the 22" bass - looks like 7 ply and painted/varnished outside. There are also 10, 12, 14 and 16" toms -all 5 ply as far as I can see

It looks like they all carried the distinctive Hayman lugs at some point - doesn't mean they are Haymans of course. But if not, what are they? Any ideas, anyone?

the spurs bracket should be the same as a lug, that one looks like a modern design and the wrap is faded equally so I think not an original Hayman

I agree with Kev, the Hayman spur mounts are round. The finish is not Hayman and there are no reinforcing rings which all Hayman shells had. I believe Hayman shells were 4 ply as well and i've not heard of a 10" Hayman shell. So maybe another brand that used turret style lugs or shells that were outfitted with Hayman lugs? What is the diameter of the lug outline? I can check to see if it at least matches the Hayman dimensions.

Thanks again Andrew - and Kev.

I've offered up a Hayman lug to one of the drums and it fits perfectly - holes spaced 1 and 3/8".

By the way, the shells aren't wrapped - they're sort of stained rather than painted. You can see the grain of the wood clearly.

Your advice: which thread or threads here would be best to use to try to figure out just what these mystery shells really are? Maybe the nut which shows in my second pic would help identification?

All further help much appreciated.
