Hi Phil.

My TROWA set (near 1959 - 1961) has all the drums in inches and all heads were calf in original -- I still store them carefully (with regular glycerine tissue wiping) and BD-heads still original fitted.

CONRAD heads were selled in ordinary musical shops and in the big special shop "Leipzig" in Moscow which was specialized for german goods in 70 - 80's. Musical goods were exported around the world by united DDR company (placed in Berlin) called "Demusa". Not so long I've seen an adv about selling low budget line TACTON set with cellulose shells in Britain -- its heads still were partly CONRAD.

Hi again,

A new find - extra strong DDR head --- 1979's double-ply "CONRAD Super"... :)

Cheers,

George.

Interesting George. Any DDR stuff I've encountered came with either western heads( Remo or Everplay) , calf( usually Altenburger) or the thin DDR heads( grey plastic hoop, unmarked). With the exception of the calf hoops, they have all been standard imperial measure ,sized heads. I would bet that those ones, you found are not bad sounding heads. It is forgotten that the world's premier orchestra snare drum continued to be made in the DDR during the communist era and although calfskin, Altenburger heads were the rule, plastic heads were and are still available and used, so the DDR heads must have been up to scratch---at least for that application.

From calfskin

Thanks Phil my friend,

Yes, these heads were not so bad but nothing outstanding.

And all of my Trowa's Altenburger calf heads are also international sized.

BTW, next week I'll plan to gather all my remaining calf heads and donate them for theater's drummer, because I decide to stop use em myself... :)

Cheers,

George.
