Have you ever seen this before?

Hello,

Thought I might give this forum a try. I have posted a thread in the Tama forum and they are very helpful but no one can tell the whole story.

Ok, here's the wonderings...

I recently found these beauties in a local music store, and they weren't in their best condition. Aften cleaning, new heads and so on, they came to life. And boy how great they sound! Out goes my, up til now, favourite Rogers Big R kit. This new (old) Tama kit is absolutely fantastic! I would really like to know more about them. Has anyone of you ever seen this badge/kit before? TAMA "Perfect Percussion".

I would think that is dedicated to the "made to order" they gave to a drum store.

The lugs and tom mounts suggest very late 60's or early 70's. What's odd is that I don't recall any "Tama" badges this early on. As OddBall suggests, it does seem like a "made to order" kit. Maybe some of our MIJ, or Tama, experts will chime in on this one!

Are we looking at the absolute earliest official Tama drum set? It's a Star "SwingStar" with Tama badges- That is VERY cool...

Well, I've owned Luan MIJ's with chewed-up grain intruding into the grommet hole. And I'm not an expert at authenticating this particular transition period between Star and Tama. I have never seen this badge on any drum. I'd lean in the direction of it being the real deal as opposed to not. Early T-badge Tama's weren't much on patterned wraps- a lot of solids and metallics. It all just fits, to me.

The color appears to be Silky Blue. You can see the same tom holder and tom brackets on some of these kits. What's missing is the Tama logo. Odd!

You nailed it.

'Perfect Percussion' was the earliest Tama badge, dating this set back to 1974.

I know from some very few others (with different drum shell constructions).

Guess it was the time, when Tama wanted to get rid of the still existing STAR hardware parts in their stock, before they started with new designed TAMA hardware parts (as e.g. tom L-arms, etc.).
