Jag, I love you brother, but do you ever read your posts before you hit 'send'? Sometimes they're downright cryptic!!

So what does '28' have to do with Shelley Manne's birthday??

You definitely make us smile!

Do you mean that Shelly Manne was born in the year 1928 and died in 1992? he was one of my first drum heroes.

Yeah 1928 was his year of birth, I assume. One of the absolute coolest jazz drummers ever. I first came to know his work through an album called The Three...with Joe Sample on piano and Ray Brown on bass. After that, I became a big fan and tried to cop some of his licks. He was just so tasty in his approach to drumming and always avoided cliches. My only criticism of him was his choice for naming his jazz club...The Manne Hole...ummmm...yeah

I'm only slightly confused: Sheldon Manne (June 11, 1920 – September 26, 1984). But, yes, Thursday would have been his 100th birthday. The reference to 1928 escaped me and Wikipedia.

Even so, I'll take a reference to him any day jaghog, so thanks for that. Loved his work.

Shelly's wife, Florence (Flip) donated a lot of his drum and percussion gear to the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) and it is part of their museum called Rhythm Center in Indianapolis. I don't know if his drum sets are there, but several of his instruments that he used for recording and studio/movie work are there. The nice folks at PAS may be able to answer questions about them and it is well worth checking out if you are in Indy.

My homage to Shelly Manne,: My 1963 Leedy Shelly Manne Black Diamond Pearl set with 14x20, 9x13, 16x16, and matching Shelly Manne 5x14 snare. Here is my late 1950s Pink Glass Glitter Leedy Shelly Manne 5x14 snare. I wish that I had one tenth the talent that Shelly Manne had.

I have always wondered what Shelly thought of the "mis-print" on his name on some of the Leedy high hat stands. I personally think he would have got a kick out of it. Note to drum companies: Check the artist's name before you make the molds.
