For metal shells I'd think trimming the grommet length down would do the trick. The metal can only roll over so far then it stops. Just like for the wood shell. You'd need to figure the exact depth though. You can measure thickness of the metal shell vs a 3 ply or whatever ply your wood shells are. A bench grinder to shorten and file to final dress/deburr edges would be my tools of choice. I took a quick look at my Sound King snare and 3 ply tom badges. Depth is at least half on the snare grommet vs the tom.

So, anyone use the 5.00 one from precision drum? This is likely to be the last kit I restore and just need something to get one kit done. They look to be the same as the OKD tool.

I have one from Precision that works great. You could easily buy the same parts at a hardware store and make the same style.
