Grommets

Loading...

I've decided to refinish the vintage Luds that I acquired recently. The only thing I'm not entirely sure about are the grommets that hold that badges in place.

The two previous kits that I've refinished were Yamaha and just had glued nameplates. I've never had to deal with the grommets. So is there a way to remove the grommets without damaging the drum and if so, can new grommets be installed so I can put the badges back on the drums?

I'm sorry if this question has been previously addressed...if it has you can just link it to me as I haven't come across it yet.

Out of all these experienced drum shell renovators there isn't anyone to help this poor cuttlefish remove the grommets? CryBaby

The only thing I've found so far is carefully bending the grommet with a pair of pliers but that seems risky especially with aged wood. I don't want any splintering...especially on the outside of the shell so I'm wondering if there is a better way of doing this.

Thanks in advance ;)

I use a Punch and hammer to bend the grommets inward on the interior, then pull them out w/ needlenose pliers. Trashes the original grommet, but Precisiondrum or Drummaker.com carries a variety of sizes and finishes of eyelets.

They have 3/8-7/16-1/2" diameter, long and short, and ones with nuts on the other side. Make sure you know the hole size and thickness of the shell.

They are so cheap, I recommend getting the correct diameter and get long and short. If the grommet is to long it wont turn out very nice. it will split on the inside, it you get a grommet that is to small, diameter, it can really screw up your badge, I ordered 4 of each for 25-40 cents a piece, chrome and brass. Also, go ahead aand order something else while your at it! lol

Precisions brass Ludwig eyelets are perfect. As far as removing the old one, I've had alot of success using a flat screwdriver and wooden mallet from the outside. YOU MUST PROTECT the badge with several layers of masking tape. Hold the screwdriver vertically against the flange on the old eyelet. A couple of firm taps usually does the trick. Turn the drum over and repeat from the opposite side. Once, the old eyelet has been "stoved-in" from 2 sides, use a needle nose to remove it. I can't stress enough the importance of masking tape in protecting the badge and in being VERY careful with your tapping. Use the $1.25 Ace hardware grommet tool (mentioned and shown here at the forum many times) to complete the job. Good luck.
