Griffin Snare Drum Update

Loading...

Hi All! This is an update for the previous post entitled: Thoughts on this drum on eBay

The drum arrived today, double-boxed! I saw no damage to the outer box, which was good. However, the inner box, containing the drum, showed definite damage. Not good! Upon opening it, I found the strainer to be bent where the snare wire strap attaches and the snare gate just below it to be bent. To be honest, these are all easy fixes, but I decided to send a message to the seller explaining this and see what they want to do. If I have to pay shipping to return it, then I'll just repair the bent parts and start my report.

For now, I haven't even removed the drum from its clear bag, but will do so tomorrow to take pictures and post them here, so you can see the damage. Again, nothing really major. I have a suspicion that the drum was already damaged when it was put into the larger box for shipping!

Stay tuned for all updates!

Just heard from the seller of this drum. They responded fairly quickly and requested pictures of the defective parts. I was informed that they will send replacement parts, so no need to return the entire drum. I've posted pictures of the defective strainer part and hoop.

Bummer! Oh well, at least it is not a show stopper. You can still do your report on shell quality, bearing edges, snare beds etc.

Those lugs look pretty generic, and it almost looks like there is some pitting on one of them already (first picture; the one to the right of the strainer-maybe its just the light)? Also, is it a high gloss finish? It's hard to tell in the photos.

Thanks for keeping us informed, and thanks to the "funding fathers" who helped purchase this drum. I can't wait to hear your findings! There is something exciting about taking a new drum(s) out of its/their packaging and diving into it/them, no matter if it's cheaper quality or not, it's still a blast!

Don't forget the white lab coat!

I was disappointed about the strainer and hoop. A replacement strainer is already on the way, but the seller didn't have a hoop. No problem, as I already took different hammers to the hoop and it now looks pretty good!

I'm going to hold off on your comments about the lugs until I have a chance to document everything. This entire process will take a bit longer than I had hoped. The Halloween weekend is upon us and I'll be heading to my girlfriends tomorrow, Saturday, to help with her very cool "Halloween Haunt" that she sets up every year. However, I'll be stopping at Backbeatkeepers house first to pick up a part I need for my Ludwig Super Sensitive and to check out Gary's new toys! Should be fun!

I'm a computer technician by trade and need to do some work next Tuesday and Wednesday. Then, my girlfriend reminded me that we have tickets to the Pantages Thursday night to see "Come Fly Away", which I guess is a musical dance thing based on Frank Sinatra songs. The best part will be the live band on stage! We're spending the night in Hollywood and won't be home until Friday. So, it looks like any serious drum dissection won't take place until that Saturday. I'm looking forward to this!

No prob at all on the delay... I'm not in a hurry anyway.

I'm thinking the same as you about the drum being damaged 'before' it was shipped. This kind of makes me think the seller picked up a quantity of shipping damaged items.

I looked at the pix you posted closely, but I will reserve any comments until you have a chance to do the lab coat thing! lol

Have a great Halloween and all the other fun stuff!

Hey fishwaltz! Yeah, I'm also reserving comment until the complete dissection is done! I've already learned allot about this drum just from taking the hoops off and one lug. However, I want to post this in sections, with pictures. And... my girlfriend thinks my white lab coat is at her place!

Well, see! Now you have an excuse to spend a week or two at her place while you 'look' for the lab coat. This is turning out to be a win win!

Also, be sure to make all measurements in English and American units, Nautical units, Metric units, horse length and ancient Myprozoplian Hardevalopical units. Weight should be taken in stones and also the weight must be compared to how much a neighbor named Earl weighs on a cloudy day.

Thanks so...

Wow, I completely forgot about this drum. I still need to post a review. Thanks for making me feel guilty! LoLoLoLo

The bottom line is that this drum is completely worthless. Please don't waste your money. For just a bit more, you can find decent Taiwan-built drums that can at least be considered a "real" drum!
