Is the grey speckled paint on the inside of 1976 Ludwig shells mean that they used lower grade wood?
The kit is either a Big Beat or Hollywood - not sure.

Yes, that IS a 3-ply shell. It's impossible for it to be a Hollywood, because the Hollywood was discontinued by the time the speckled paint appears.

How were you able to tell?
I looked at the 1975-1 catalog on VDG and did not see any difference in the sets other than the Big Beat said that it came w Atlas hardware.

I am considering purchasing it and eventually adding a 2nd floor tom to it.

Although your drums are 3 ply maple/poplar/maple,the interior ply may not be as pleasing to the eye as a clear maple,so Ludwig just used granitone(trunk paint) on all the classic series,and standard series interiors.I don't know if I would call it inferior,but I guess it wasn't furniture grade either.It mainly just came down to cosmetics,and consistant products.
