Gretsch Snare Mufflers (Round Badge era)

Loading...

I own 2 Gretsch Round Badge Snares.

1 has the classic muffler knob, which measures about 1 3/8"

the other has a much smaller knob which measures 3/4".

I have seen both knobs in various pictures of various Gretsch snares, but I don't know the difference.

Anybody know why there are 2 models? Which one is more valuable/rare?

I've only seen the small muffler knob show up on lower end / student model snares.

That is interesting. The larger knob is on my Name Band, and the smaller on my 8 lug Renown strainer model.

I don't consider that a low end or student model. I wonder if the original owner changed it.

I would still like to hear back from others, so please keep posting!

I considered the drums with the renown strainer lower line since the the micro was the top of the line.

I see what you mean Rich. Do you (or anyone out there) think it would be incorrect if I were add the larger knob to my Reknown strainer model. The reason I say this is because I am keeping the renown model, but selling the microsensitive drum. So I want to have the best (but also correct) hardware on the model that I am keeping.

just to confuse the issue, there's also a hex (6-sided) muffler knob Gretsch put on some early 50's 3-plys. Ive only seen them on Pratt bass mufflers and a few snares. I think they where leftovers from the 40's. The inside parts and mounting holes are the same as round knobs.

I think you should leave the correct knob on its original drum.

A wrong knob will only devalue the drum and potential future buyers will assume the drum has been messed with.

Many times, guys that use Gretsch drums take out the mufflers altogether for playing, and put them back when they go back on the shelf or out for sale.
