Gretsch Score

Loading...

Hey guys,

There is this cat that lives in my neighborhood that I have known for at least 35 years.

He was a drummer long before I was.

I bought my first drum set from him back when I was a teenager.

He hasn't really played the drums in the last 25 years or so.

He was at my house today helping me with some yard work and I was showing the Gretsch drums that I have been working on.

He says "Man! Gretsch drums are great. The first drum set I ever had were Gretsch."

I was like 'That's cool".

Then he said "I think they are still up in the attic at my moms house"

I said "Really? Can we go see them".

Then we went over to his moms house and climbed up in the attic.

He was moving boxes and crap and then he said "there they are".

He climbed down and told me to go get them.

I climbed up into the tiny attic and picked one of them up and turned it around and there was the Round Badge.

It is a 20" kick, 12"tom and a 14" cob snare.

He told me I could have them.

I was like: Walking

Well, once I got them home I realized that they are not in very good condition.

The bass drum shell looks pretty good.

One hoop is warped and one is straight.

The snare is totally warped.

The shell is bent and one of the hoops looks like a capitol D.

The 12" tom looks pretty good but it is missing a hoop and tensioners.

The wrap is black and it is cracked all over.

These are definitely "project" drums but I couldn't pass them up.

You certainly are a lucky dog! Once you get a list of parts that you need let me know and I'll look through my stash. I may be able to help you out.

Thanks Gerald,

I'm not sure what I am going to do with them yet.

Other than just clean them up and see what I have. :D

You're on your way to a very cool little players kit. Congratulations on the score. Don't know about the warpage on the snare. From the photos it looks like the head is just setting funky. But the other issues are completely workable. I found one in just as bad of condition and after a lot of elbow grease, scrounging for some missing parts and a clean rewrap and heads, I've got an amazing Round Badge kit for playing out with no heartburn on getting bumped around. As you probably know, finishing it off with a 14" RB floor tom will be no easy feat, though. A 16" orphan might be more reasonable. Keep us posted on the clean up.

I have a Gretsch rail ....

About same shape as the Slingy one you just got from me.....

Have a few claws/rods for the BD too...

MAYBE a 5 hole 12" still .......

Mac, I started out with the same set-up as you have now, a round badge bass, snare, & rack tom. The wrap was beat, all cracked, missing pieces, nothing worth saving.

I cleaned them up, rewrapped them and added a floor tom. It's one of the best looking and sounding kits that I currently own. If you're going to keep them, invest the money in putting them right, you'll be glad you did.
