Just took possession of these beauties. They appear to be in great shape, aside from years of filth that I need to deal with. I understand that these wraps are prone to scratching, so I'm looking for advice regarding cleaning techniques and experiences that you guys might want to share. I sure don't want to mess these up!
Gretsch satin flame cleaning advice
Scrubbing Bubbles cleaner will get dirt out of the wrap ridges without scrubbing. Remove the hardware and tape the inside of the shell holes. Rinse well.
Waxing doesn't work well for obvious reasons.
Nice drums. Congrats.
What sizes are they? Look great!
This size configuration is catalogued as a Rock 'n Roll drum outfit, and consists of 2 12" toms, 16" floor tom, 20" BD, and a 14X5 snare.
Considering how prone these wraps are to scratches and scuffs, this kit is in suprisingly good conditions. A few small dings on the mounted toms, but the BD and FT are almost flawless. The color is to me very mesmerizing, which is no surprise, as I dig psychedelia in general. This kit was apparentlly not gigged much - virtually no pedal rash on the BD hoop!
They are a bit grungy, but I'll take my time in bringing them back to life. I spoke with Jack Lawton today, who recommended Soft Scrub with a soft bristled nylon brush, followed by Windex to remove the Soft Scrub residue. I do like the Scrubbing Bubbles idea also, and plan on giving that a whirl as well.
Super-cool finish. Good luck cleaning and look forward to after pics.
Jack Lawton told me to use soft scrub on regular wrap. Not sure what he advises about the satin flame wrap, but John Aldridge advised that I use a very soft bristle tooth brush and a mild soapy water such as Palmolive and water, and scrub a small section at a time, which will loosen the grime out of the little crevices that is in the satin flame wrap. then rinse with water. True satin flame wrap does scratch easily. The only reservation I'd have about soft scrub would be because it is very mildly abrasive, but it would probably rinse away as well. You don't really want to polish satin flame wraps because they aren't a shiny surface, but a softer plastic "ridged" surface.
