Gretsch roundbadge snare vintage...to be or not to be

Loading...

Hey guys, I'd love your input on this. I just grabbed a 60s Gretsch prog jazz kit, without a snare. I'm considering grabbing a matching snare to go with it...if I find one. Any thoughts on the old roundbadge wood snares? I'm not necessarily stuck on it, so I'm open to using something else vintage (perhaps a metal dish or even another vintage brand) if these aren't that great. No right or wrong here, but any thoughts? I'm new to the Gretsch world.

I'd suggest Slingerland Hollywood Ace or Artist. Ludwig snares sound good too.

I have a radio king, and some Ludwig metals, which I may end up using. I don't have any experience with the Gretsch snares...

I currently have 4 Progressive Jazz snares and I sold one of my collection to a fellow forumite a while back. I have been very happy with the sound of all of them. They are responsive, woody and organic sounding. They do not sound like a Dynasonic or Acrolite IMO and that suits me fine. If the snare sound you have in your head is from one of the previously mentioned you may not like the Gretsch Prog Jazz but it is definitely a nice snare set up properly.
