Gretsch Round Badge bass drum help

Loading...

hi there,

i was hoping someone here might be able to help date a bass drum a little more accurately for me.

it's a gretsch 24"x12" bass drum, pre-1960 as far as i can tell by hardware and badge... it's painted silver inside, and when i bought it was painted blue with a silver stripe around the middle. the paint was flaking everywhere, so i stripped

it and refinished it with a thin coat of clear laquer to seal the grain.

here's some pictures of it, i only have a blurry shot of the 'before' handy:

I think I have the same drum. Mine is from 1953...it is part of a student line kit called the jazz combo or something similar. Single tension. i have the matching snare. Both of my drums have the original calf heads...so atleast the snare isn't really playable.

How does it sound with modern heads?

that's the one!

it sounds amazing actually, very very wet and thumpy.

i have a powerstroke 4 batter and amabassador resonant with a strip of tshirt stretched under the rim of the resonant head, and i've been putting a wool sock over the beater.

i wish the finish had been salvageable, yours look incredible.

I did actually! A freezing cold outdoor storage capsule!

I got it from a buddy for $100 for both drums. He had em forever. He is a guitar collector and didn't really have any use for this kit. He asked if I wanted them and I said YES!

The only problem with mine is that the throwoff isnt functional. I have to turn the knob to get the snares to go up to the head. Can't figure out why it doesnt work. Looks complete. Any thoughts?

The snare head says "Radio King"....did Slingerland make heads for Gretsch back then or is this a very early replacement? The set looks virtually unplayed so I have a hard time believing that someone would have replaced a head!

I had one frozen up on a 60's round badge, I pulled it off and apart, lubed it up, worked it a bit and it came back to life beautifully.
