Gretsch Player Project

From King Louie

Beautiful kit! If it were my find I would just get it to playing shape on the cheap, taking care to not have to drill any extra holes, and play it till the neighbors called the cops.

And if I were the cop showing up on the noise complaint.. I'd be like, uh hey man.. mind if I play your drums?! :D

Well slowly but surely I am rounding up the player parts and getting the kit back together. Finished the snare and all the shells are buffed and detailed. Just to go through and tumble all the hardware, then assemble them.

The snare sounds awesome and I tried a "S" hoop on top and works well.

(mchair303)My tom mount is the hoop style(have all of it) and the two brackets on top of the bass drum appear to have been for cymbal L arms.

Some photos attached.

Photos of the completed shells. They actually cleaned up pretty well, but have the typical black freckles in the wrap in places and some fading, but overall pretty good shape considering that they are from 1946.

I am a little late to the game here but that is a great score. As mentioned earlier, I take my player kits that so often are missing the bass drum resonant side hoop, claws and T rods and move the existing batter side equipment to the front. On the batter side I'll put new claws that are similar and then use key rods. That way I have more accurate and convenient tuning in the batter side and the front side still looks original.

That is what I plan to do but having a little trouble coming up with a tension rod that is just right as the rocket lugs are down a little bit on the shell. A 6" rod is to long so looking for something "just" right but I will measure it up to get the correct length when I assemble it later today. Probably will have to cut some off and rethread for now.

That kit is awesome, looks like a fun project. Love the staggered lugs on the tom.

Those are looking great. I have always actually liked how the old wraps like this develop those black spots in them. This will be a really cool set when completed. Nice work!

Just about done. I need a couple of tension rods and the decal for the head to come in and then this baby is done. I left the WMP inlay in the hoop I picked up but will look for some gold sparkle sometime to replace it, but the WMP was in good shape so I left as is. It sounds awesome! Those old 3 ply shells really sing. Here are a couple of quick photos and I will post in image gallery when the last of the missing items show up.
