Gretsch Model 4108 Snare Last viewed: 1 minute ago

I picked this up today in a local pawn shop. I know very little about the drum other than what I read a few minutes ago on the Gretsch website (Badge Timeline). It's a 70's Stopsign Badge - first stopsign design....and from the Baldwin Era. Aluminum with a not-so-functional Renown Strainer. It's in good shape. The "button feet" snare stand came with the drum. It also had the barrel-shaped drum key hanging off the stand in a zip-loc bag. The store owner didn't know the hole in the drum is a key holder and was surprised when I clipped it into the drum....saying "that's pretty cool!" But he didn't raise the price after that.

It needs a good cleaning/dusting and some lub here and there and maybe some new heads. The strainer is original as is everything on the drum as far as I can tell so far

$145

Well.....it doesn't sound that "Great" just now. The strainer needed some work - it was sticking a little. I took everything off the drum last night except the mute and badge of course and cleaned and oiled all the parts. I used some steel wool on the strainer slider. There were some little jagged pieces there (tiny lumps of chrome?). The strainer seems to be working good now - will have to see once I get the drum together. The heads have no dints but I think they're the original heads. I'll slap them back on the drum and see if I can tune it up. It will be a nice addition to my Gretsch collection.

I've got the drum back together. The problem with the Renown strainer sticking was as I mentioned above - the rough finish on the slider was catching. I carefully sanded/steel wooled it off cleaned and lubed it and it works perfectly now. I'm using the original heads and the drum is pretty decent sounding.

I kind of have to laugh at how I found the drum. My wife went into a pawn shop yesterday looking for a second hand tile cutter for a reno we're doing at home. She saw the drum. She phoned me at work to tell me she saw a tile cutter but there is a Gretsch drum there for $145 - it has a square badge and it looks like a white finish. My wife is always ribbing me about how many drums I have and that I'm turning into a 'hoarder." She's pretty tollerant I must say. So I asked her why she told me about the drum? She said I know how much you love all this and I couldn't help but tell you. Bless her heart.

I thought it was a Catalina - maybe one with the WMP finish.

I was really surprised to see the "stopsign" badge and scooped it right away.

Thanks for posting this

I didn't get the drum case with mine and I didn't see this ad. I wasn't looking for another drum when I bought mine yesterday - it just 'fell into my lap' - couldn't pass it up for the price.

This drum - at the price advertised - would cost me more than $450 with the shipping added. And if Canada Customs looked at it it would be more tacked onto that....and if UPS was involved there would be a further "broker" (leaving me broker - I guess that's where that comes from) probably $40-$50 or more.

So which aluminum shelled drum is supposed to be tops? Slingerland? Ludwig? I know better than to think the drum collecting community loves the Gretsch. Being a Gretsch fan is kind of like being an Oakland Raiders fan. I have and always will be a Gretsch guy though just like my Raiders.
