Gretsch Microsensitive Strainer

Loading...

So I know there's a ton of fuss over the MS Strainer. High prices for replacements, accusations of inflated prices, too few around, etc.

I'm interested in the single point butt-plate adjustment side. Not the more problematic player's side throw-off.

This would work perfectly for the butt-plate side of several vintage drums that I play a lot, and would make some snare response far more consistent.

From the pictures I've seen it seems like a very simple design. Does anyone have one of these they don't use? Is there someone that makes a reproduction unit (maybe the same guys that make the arm repro)? Or is there another similar design that would fit the bill for the same need?

Most importantly, I can only judge the operational capability from the pictures. Do these have as many problems as the other strainer?

Thanks guys!

An easier to find, and much cheaper alternative may come to you as a surprise. I have two MIJ snares that have a simple "copy" of the MS, butt side. And once you are done scavenging the parts, I would be willing to take the rest of the drum off your hands. It is an amazingly simple, and suprisingly accurate piece of art....well, maybe not "art", but artfully designed and well executed substitute. Please, don't take this as an insult, or that I am crazy, it is a really cool piece, and I'll bet Mikey has one or a dozen he'd be willing to part with. I have two and seeking a third for another drum that I am about to acquire. I am very impressed with it's simplicity. You have to get used to using it, but it makes those micro-adjustments quick and easy. In some cases, you have to release the throw first, but is a quick and easy "micro" adjustment.

Johnnistix,

Thanks for the info. What works best for the drums is the single nut attachment point. So I'm afraid the MIJ wouldn't work. For this project, the fewer holes, the better - or perhaps "the simpler - the better". It seemed like the MS butt plate was the best fit.

Mikey, would you mind posting a pic of the butt-plate side strainer on here? I have a sneaking suspicion that it is just like the one I have on a sonor pancake model.

Are my ninja-instincts correct?

(JB, This is a copy of the PM I sent you. Must not have gotten it.)

I have a Camco single point adjustable snare butt such as supplied with Camco studio and student models. It has an incorrect, but functional adjustment nut/wheel, but resembles the Gretsch counterpart.

Look at whatever info you can find regarding this part to see if it will work for you.
