GRETSCH Jimmy Pratt felt mute

Does anyone here have a bunch of experience using this mute?

When I restored my 58 3ply 12x20 Gretsch bass drum a few years ago I replaced the felt strip. I thought I put it together properly but it has never really worked well. Is there actually a particular thickness of felt you have to use to have the mute function properly? I just went to a sewing supply store and bought a piece of felt, cut it and istalled it so that it looked right....I don't know.

The mute comes in contact with the inside of the head near the dial end but not through the whole length of the felt strip. I could tinker...trial and error...lots of errors, but it would be nice to know if it's a simple thing.....like "install it properly" maybe:)

Can use your help here.

Thanks,

Gary

Thank you sir!

Gary yes, the felt at the fabric stores that stuff is virtually useless. it's not thick enough to use it as we drummers need it to be or do the job, Gibralter makes the right felt you'll need, I just bought two packs of it myself last week Install that back on your pratt and you'll be a happy camper.

I've sent the photo to the local drum store.

Thanks again.

I put some MoonGel on the batter head - three pieces - a piece here and there - and it works pretty good. I will install the proper felt though..because it's nice when the drum and parts work as intended.....or at least somewhat.
