Is a Catalina Jazz in fine condition worth 300, minus snare? I have an opportunity to look at it and would like to know if it is worth it, or should I low ball, itr is a "clubdate" style lug set up, 18-12-14, and silver spark, looks like new.

That seems to be about the going price that I've seen for a used club kit. There's one on my local CL today same config for $375.

Nope. I picked up my Gretsch Catalina's (several) brand new - delivered to my door - for right at 400 each. That was with a snare and hardware. If you watch end of fiscal year closeouts, you can catch 'em just right. You can do better than this.

Sorry. I'm wrong. Mine were not the Jazz's. They go for about 50 more. So, 300 is a pretty good price, provided it's not the single lug model. Avoid those.

What's so horrible about the single lug models? I'm not 100% up on my "captured import" Gretsch drums.....so if you could elaborate as I'm looking at one of those myself....

Those have a tendency to bend. This is why Gretsch changed the build. They were sending out replacement rods to all four corners.

I disagree with avoiding the earlier Gretsch clubs. There were the 6 ply mahogany that came off from the Catalina Elite line, when they replaced the line with the double rows of lugs, they went to the 9 ply mahogany, which is pretty crappy in my opinion. I have seen too many of these with splitting issues in the shell right off the show floor.

I have one of the first runs of the single lug models, I haven't bent a rod yet, and I use this kit at least once a week, for rehearsal or gig.

I will say this, the snare drum is the week point in this kit. This is whether it is first or second run... it's just a bland sounding snare.

Anyway, that's all from me.

That is a good price. I use mine at least once a week and it holds up and sounds good. I use a Slingy snare withit though.
