While hunting for SSB drums and parts for my walnut finish Salvation Army SSB kit, I found a Gretsch WMP 13" rack tom and 16"x16" floor tom from the very early 70's for sale together locally on Craigslist. My original intention was to use these drums as donors for the lugs, hoops, and other hardware to enhance the walnut kit. When I got the drums home I realized pretty quickly that I couldn't do it. They were just too nice to part out. So, I decided to do the same thing I was doing with the walnut kit. I searched out matching drums and hardware and put this kit back together. I got very lucky and found some great drums and parts for this. I went on an adventure to Santa Barbara to get the nearly perfect 22" Bass drum, the snare was a lightly used cadet snare, still in its original case with a flat base stand. A great find. The last and hardest drum to find was the 12" rack tom. All the drums are in great shape with no cracking or fading on the original wrap. The double tom mount and all the other hardware pieces I found were shiny and clean. The kit looks great and sounds amazing. This was a fun and challenging project. Special thanks to Starship Krupa for meticulous final assembly and tuning, as well as a wealth of great advice and encouragement throughout the project. This kit can be seen at the newly opened 3 Tracks Music in Portland, Oregon.
