Gretsch early '60s COB 4160

Loading...

Quite clean and complete COB 4160 (pre-knurled version). I'm not a Gretsch expert, but I believe the baseball throw and butt are original - both solid and work well - has muffler - chrome very good with a few scratches here and there and two small dints about 3/8" across each - quite minor - low serial number - batter head is quite warn. No key and generic snare wires.

Im up on the pricing of the typical RB 4160s but not so sure what a pre-knurled version in this shape would be worth - I was thinking $425 shipped.

Any comments on this snare very welcome and appreciated!

Gretsch offered this style of drum from at least as early as they placed paper labels with serial numbers which is about 1962. Your drum's serial number is not all that low (roughly 30,000 numbers had been issued before they got to your drum) but places the drum in about 1964/65 or so. I have not seen the non-knurled drums selling at a premium over the knurled ones. I would compare it to other model 4160 drums with microsensitive throws to get a feel for what it is worth. I have one with a serial number in the 37000 range.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72
