Gretsch 4157...Good or Boxy

Loading...

I'm really looking for a Walnut gloss snare to match my '06 kit but I'm also looking a vintage 4157 until I find the one I really want. Are these one of the infamous snares? As in; some of them can sound great and some of them can sound dry and boxy...as in crappy? I believe the one I am looking at is from the late 60s. Also, can I replace the current problematic Microsensitive snare strainer with the newer version without making any new holes?

Thanks much.

I have owned several 4157's (all 60's) and yeah it's 50/50. I would just re work the edges if it was a matter more of sound. The NEW version of the microsensitive strainer will work on the 4157 or 4160 with no extra holes. I used it on my 4160 with no issues and it would on the 4157 also.
