I'm impressed that you're getting a good sound out of your 3-ply with an Ambassador. I tried a few times and had no luck. Now that I've got the Fiberskyn, my go-to snares are the 3-ply and the beautiful Acro that you sent me. Thanks again, by the way--I just love that snare.

Ya know, that's one I probably shoulda kept. Really great Acro. I think the rims are alot of it. But, as I remind my girlfriend, "you can't keep them all". I prefer to think of it as "catch and release". Besides that, everyone's got their personal sound. Mine's really become what I'm getting out of the Gretsch. I use it with everything....

Catch and release. I love that concept. I've been catching lately and just had to release 4 drums to Craigslist. I'm not sure if all of them will swim away from the boat, though.

After changing heads to a Fiberskyn batter & Emperor Reso yesterday; tweaking and playing it for over an hour today, I would now rate this drum above my lovely 5.5 & 6.5 L&L Broadways, my '38 6.5 RK, and my '40 7" 'super' RK. That's saying A LOT! Clapping Happy2 Ron

FYI... Update, if anyone cares!

I've gone back to an Amb reso w/ FS3 batter.

Although I've found I like the way an Emp reso mellows and deepens the pitch of 4" snares as well as benefiting some 5.5"s, this particular 6.5" doesn't need the mellowing effect of an Emp reso.

I still have a personal preference for this Gretsch over the RKs, however... FWIW... it's perhaps a dead heat with the 5.5" L&L.(FS3 batter/Ludwig reso).Clapping Happy2
