Just been listening to stone sours' self titled first album, and what a great drum sound. I know it's in a studio, but to me, doesn't sound over produced. Just a great drum sound. Anyone else like to share their favourite drum sound. One more I can add, I heard on a commercial of all places. So I track i.d'ed it and found it was a band called white denim, with a song called shake shake shake. Awesome snare!
great drum sound.
Bonham, Phil Collins, Moon are the sounds my mind goes to.
Dead dogs like rusty fire hydrants!!!
Some of my favorites are the drums on Insanity Later, and Resist Convenience by the band Folly. These guys combine metal, hardcore, ska, punk and other genres into some concoction of awesomeness. Often times combining multiple genres not just in one song, but in one part of a song. Not once do the drums sound out of place. They are distinctly modern in sound but I think to make the drums fit in with everything going on in some of their songs is incredible.
I'm also a huge fan of the drums on Strange Cousins from the West by Clutch.
I gotta add the other side of the coin here too... the drums on Pray for Villians by Devildriver are an insult to anyone with ears

"Great drum sound?"
Steve Gadd or Joe Morello on -any- kit!
John
Of course this is all very subjective but.....
Jay Bellerose on Joe Henry's album "Civilians"
The Beatles "Abbey Road"
Matt Chamberlain on the Brad Mehldau tune "When it Rains"
So many great sounds. Love the drum mix on Bruford's "One of a Kind"; Mr. Colaiuta on Zappa's "Joe's Garage"; for some reason, Joey Kramer's kit sound on "Live Bootleg"; Neil Peart's sound on "A Farewell to Kings"; Bonham's snare on just about anything...........gotta bet back to work.

PS - How can I forget Simon Phillips' sound on Derek Sheirinian's solo stuff. Nice sound and of course, playing.
Context is everything.
I love the sound that Russ Kunkel used to get with James Taylor.
And I love Bonham's sound with led Zeppelin.
Steve Gadd gets a great sound from drums from which many would not get.
etc.

I really like Offspring's former drummer, Ron Welty. Love his sound, especially his snare!
Edit- the album Smash in particular.
My fav drum sound is the snare drum from the original 1954 Decca recording of Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and the Comets. The rimshots sound like cannons - thanks to Billy Gussak (session drummer), the fat sound of the Pythian Temple in NYC and Milt Gabler's production work. Amazing stuff!!
