Gray painted interiors....

Anyone know the "appropriate" shade of gray for the MIJ gray painted interior kits of the early 70's?

I am working on a Rogers R-360 kit (made in Japan by Yamaha) and had to sand off a lot of mold and yuck from the bottom of the bass drum shell. It is structurally sound and looks good now, but I sanded off the gray paint with the mold. I am doing this for a friend, and she wants a hole in the center of the front head, so for cosmetic purposes, I wanted to repaint the interior at the bottom so it looks uniform. If nothing else, I can get some swatches at the hardware store to see what is close. The R-360's have a little bit of greenish tint to the gray, not quite a pure gray.

BTW, I was sure to use a dust mask for sanding! Between the mold and that paint (which I can pretty much guess is lead based), that could have been nasty on the ol' lungs!

If you can, bring the drum to your local paint store...They should be able to scan the interior of the drum (if there is some paint left) and tell you the closest match...That`s what I did with a MIJ snare that I sold...

Cheers

Grantro is spot on. If that is not possible, the swatches from the store should get you pretty close. Post some pics if you can, I love seeing before and afters!

Yep, grantro has the best idea! I have also read that Krylon flat grey is pretty close. I suppose it all depends on how exact you want to get it. Personally, I'd follow grantro's advice.

i work in a Benjamin Moore paint store, and have an oyster 60's yamaha bass drum shell, (a 20"), so next rainy day, i'm going to bring it to work and see if i can get my boss to get me a recipe for a direct colour match (which we do ALL DAY there) in a quart of flat latex, and post the formula

don't know why i never thought of this sooner... i got the shell without any hardware for $10, and have been meaning to try some wet sanding on the outer shell to remove the yellowing, as well as the RetroBrite treatment

forgot all about the inner plies Lame

For us Canadians, I use Home Hardware Beauti-Tone velvet acrylic latex medium base paint for MIJ shells...Irony is the color and the swatch number is C031...

No disrespect to davezedlee by using a competitors paint...I`ve always used Home Hardware paint...

Cheers
