I started a thread about VDF over at DFO. This thread - (a not-so-uncommon sentiment expressed here) is (but one reason) why this site should not ever go away.
DJ333!
Nah ... there's no "slow death" happening here at all, and that was an interesting post over at the DFO, although I don't know why you felt the need. However!, you can post up whatever you want of course!, I was 'jes sayin. So with that said, let me briefly address your concerns:
The internet ... has changed. It's that simple! I have been here for 11 years! .. ( that just blows me away actually! ) .. and in that time, many things have altered the way "it used to be" with regard to forums, etc. Today, and I think you just might agree, FB has pretty much taken over completely .. and .. point was made about mobile devices being the de facto today vs. the PC, and that is also correct. Folks go about getting and contributing their information differently today, with again, the mobile device now being the norm. That alone changes many things with a drum forum that was designed for the PC era. David's concept here is the same as it was originally .. but .. people come and go, and that has always been the case, and even with DFO. This also being a FOCUSED site for the history, care and feeding of vintage drums, makes it more "specialized", rather than a catch all drum forum. I'm not saying it's better, just more specialized, so that in itself will contribute to a high turnover of people with the stalwarts remaining in place despite the changes otherwise. In addition, and this may be even more apropos to your original query:
David started this as a labor of love, a side project, a historical hobby if you will. it's NOT his main gig. Once he got it up and running, and uploaded a TON of his own content, he decided to just let it run. Of course, attend to things when they were needed as far as updates, etc... but don't mess with it otherwise. it was originally conceived as a place to be comfortable, chill, look at and chat about, vintage drums. It has succeeded on many levels! .. and .. we do boast one of the nicest membership rosters around, meaning ... outside of a few malcontents from time to time, this place runs very well with everyone really wanting to help everyone else with very little in the way of posturing or ego. So...
... a "slow death" for the VDF? Nah! Business as usual, with the emphasis on a very nice membership base and a relaxed atmosphere. ALL of the stuff here can easily be accessed on FB today, and a lot of guys do that too! But, the VDF is HERE for those that want to visit and participate with very little trolling taking place, which is a MAJOR plus! Hopefully this might have shed some light on your query?
