Loading...

Ummmm what a day. I helped a buddy of mine move and he gave me what he thought was just some crappy snare. Brought it home did some digging turns out to be an early Ludwig Supraphonic 5 x 14" keystone badge with serial number #6385. It has the "bat" style muffler.I believe is it was made in the spring of 1964. So far magnets are not sticking to it, I'm going to weigh it tomorrow. Crossing my fingers......oh yeah this morning the best snare in my house was a Mapex Q series P.O.S. .......happy happy man!!!!!!

Very nice - you can't find a better snare, in my humble opinion.

By the way, a magnet won't stick to any Supra shell. Being that it has a S.N., it is most likely not brass. Try the magnet test on the hoops, though - they are either steel or brass.

As far as weights, if it's around 9lbs+, it is brass.

Enjoy that drum.

Just wondering -- I've got some extra time on my hands this week. Does your buddy need any more help moving any of this things?LoLoLoLo

It sounds like you've got yourself a "special" friend there. I'd definitely keep him!

Enjoy the drum.Cool1

Here's some pics of the old girl, sorry about the quality my camera is less than amazing! The snare came with the original snare side head which is kind of cool, too bad it's beat to hell and has a small hole in it. Can you guys recommend a good polish/cleaner so I can get this thing shining again. I'm pretty sure it's Ludalloy/Aluminum it I don't think it weighs enough to be brass but I still have to get it weighed.....wouldn't that be something though! I'm just so stoked to have such a fantastic snare in my possession!!!! SWEET SWEET LOVING!!!!!!

OOOOohhhh! A 1964 Supra. It has the RED muffler!! Nice! Wow! Hey, I wouldn't be too upset if it's not a brass one....since I happen to like the aluminum ones better, anyway! flowers2 The brass ones are nice and yes, they are more valuable/collectible. But, they don't necessarily sound any better. The jury is still out on that!

You have an EXTREMELY nice snare drum there!

Windex works pretty well on chrome. I have some kind of automotive chrome polish around here somewhere....don't remember the brand.

If it's covered with tar and nicotine (many objects from that era are), then you could try some paper towels and rubbing alcohol to get that stuff off. Otherwise, it looks really, really nice as-is!

I just tuned her all up and it sounds like someone is chopping wood when I hit it. DAmn that is a wicked crack! I can see quite clearly why this is such a sought after snare, puts my other snares in their place rather quickly. Thank you for the kind words!!! I'm just totally blown away right now!!!! Anyone ever try googone to clean their drums, there seems to be some brutal stains on the shell. That stuff might get it off, but I don't want to risk damaging the finish further. Also I tried the magnet on the hoops and it didn't stick. Brass hoops?!?!?

Yeah, I think if the magnet doesn't stick to the rims, then that's an indication they are brass. Cool!

Yep. I'd be blown away, too! That's not only a Supra....It's a REALLY nice Supra! It's a really nice, sought-after one, because the red muffler felt was only used for like a year or something. When you see a red muffler, it's almost a sure bet it's from 1964. I have a 1964 Pioneer and it has the red muffler, too. I mean, hey, it doesn't make any difference in terms of the sound, but it's still a fairly narrow window when those were made. And the baseball bat handle is always the coolest of them all!. The shell is seamless. That's a P-83 pressed steel throwoff -probably the best throwoff ever made (in many people's opinions -including mine). Brass rims would be an extra-nice bonus.

As far as Supras go, this one would be one of the more desirable ones -scratches and all! I know it sounds and plays like pure butter! The Supra and the Acrolite are the best metal snare drums in the world, in my opinion.

There is a thread somewhere on this forum with a lot of discussion about cleaning chrome. I like Mothers Chrome Polish. Seems to easily remove gunk that you might think would be hard to get off and leaves a deep shine.

My Supra is a late 1963 (no serial number), it's aluminum with brass hoops. You do need to stop aluminum corrosion, if there is any, before it gets bad...it will take the chrome right off. Check the bearing edges. That's where mine has some very small spots of corrosion I've had to work on.

For 46 years my Supra has just been "the snare that I got with my Hollywood set". It's always sounded great, but after reading all the positive comments about Supras on this forum I'm down right proud to have it.

Nice Gift!

Damn! Even the original snare wire set with the plastic ends is in great shape! Many times, those wires get bent or the ends crack. Yours look to be in excellent shape! Nice!:Santa:
