Killer deal on those John! The last year or so, I've been trying out 15's and love them. After buying and selling some, I ended up with a pair of 70's/80's Paiste 2oo2 Sound Edge hats. I want to find a pair of 15 New Beats next.

Thank you gents! :D

This is my first set of 15's ever. Back in 63' when I first learned to play I was taught to keep time for myself by using the hi-hat heel/toe, rocking my foot back and forth in time. That 'chick' is where I get my time from. The 15's are louder than my Mehmet/Istanbul Jazz 14's and I'm loving 'hearing the hats' chick, chick, chick going in the background as I play. They sound awesome! Letting the air out of them playing funk beats is a real treat for the ears. I'm loving them.

Thanks for all the kind words... I'm a happy drummer! It was a nice little score.

I own a ton of hats. And some good ones too! But I have a pair of hollow ink cymbals that someone put together as hats. They are so musical. They really sound great.

I've always wanted to try a pair of hollow ink 15" quick beats. Hope to run across a deal on some one day.

novice question,

What is the sound/playability difference, generally, between 13's and 15's?

Does the extra weight of the 15's make them close faster and maybe sound louder?

(my downbeats came with 60's 15's , A zildjian === I don't really have anything to compare them to)

THanks!

Mike - They sure don't come up for sale very often, even on Fleabay! If a set does come along, you'll probably have to spring for $250+ to get em. I'll keep my eyes open for you...

BTW, I'm -finally- getting to the post office tomorrow, so look for mail from me next week! Me and the Beev have been shopping for a new sofa all week. Ours broke! One of us, ahem, is a fat-as$! :D

Moonweasel - As for 'playability' it all depends on what sound you're going for/looking for. I mentioned earlier that the 15's are significantly louder and have a more pronounced 'chick' than my lighter, smaller Mehmet 14" Jazz hats. I can hear the hats better with the 15's. There is more 'meat' to them than smaller cymbals and I'm sure that contributes to the sound they produce. I've only owned one set of 13's and that was so long ago, I almost forget what they sounded like! Hopefully one of the boys will chime in and give you better feedback than I can.

I have some older 13" A Zildjian hi hat cymbals and I keep them on my studio set. They sound really nice and balance well in a mic'ing situation.

I use my 14" A Zildjian hi hats with my medium size sets and they cut through well, but if I want a big hat sound I use my 15" 81 Paise 2002 Sound edge hi hats. There big and you can really hear the chic . I always keep the time going on my hats with my foot when playing the ride cymbal and even through drum fills. Seems to add more Rythm to the groove. I have a hollow logo 20" ping ride that's really heavy too. Great score.

I have traditionally enjoyed thin matched weight vintage cymbals. But as of late, I've found that I like to hear the hats more in the mix of things. Been playing a combination of first stamp/trans stamp avedis for a while now. Heavier than what I normally like but really enjoying them.

As far as 13's, I like them in a new beat type setup with a spread between the weights,70-75% ratio of top hat to bottom hat. Nice and crisp with some substantial volume.
