Good Songs For A Rookie To Drum To

Loading...

I want to know some really good songs (overall and in drums) for me to play. I am a rookie so I can't do anything "extreme" yet. I am currently working on the song "Back In Black" by AC/DC. Something around that level of drumming would be great because it has a basic beat with cool fills in it. Any suggestions?

^ Dude. Play what you like to listen to; there's no better way to improve your game, except lessons. Nothing will drive you more than the music you enjoy. The more you like it, the more it will drive you to emulate it. If it ain't fun, it's done.

Good point. Thanks

Start off basic, with music that you really like but isn't too complex. For me, it was The Eagles Greatest Hits album. A lot of solid time-keeping on that record.

I was listening to the Eagles couple days ago and thought "the drumming seems simple enough". I should try sometime.

Funny you mention "Back in Black" that used to be the first song I would teach my students once they were ready to move on to learning full songs. Since then I have found a few even simpler songs that my students seem to like which are:

"Say it Aint So" by Weezer (available in the Hal Leonard Rock Band edition with backing tracks.)

"Wake Me up when September Ends" by Green Day, also available in the Green Day Hal Leonard book whcih includes play along tracks.

I find that my students progress best when they are reading the full drum charts, and have the ability to play along "with the band" using the play along CD.

I really reccomend those Hal Leonard books, once you start progressing, there are so many great titles. Altough they are harder than Green Day, some of my favories are the Funk play along, Best of The Doors, and Jimi Hendrix : Smash Hits.

Actually I was just playing along with "Cissy Strut" by the Meters last night by myself after I was done teaching students out of the syncopation book.

As already mentioned , just play what you like. Even just keeping a steady beat to your favorite song can be a great learning expeirence...locking in with the bass, and keeping a steady groove. just making it feel good. That is the biggest thing that a lot of drummers are missing.

If you are ever in the NJ/NYC are drop me a line, I have a studio with all those books and play alongs running through the sound system. I also make house calls.

Good luck and most importantly have fun!
