good deal?

Loading...

hi there,

in my neverending quest for a reasonably priced gretsch rb kit i came across this offer:

http://www.classicvintagedrums.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65_71&products_id=516

since i dont care so much about cosmetics and originality but sound is it worth it?

would this be playable on a regular basis or is it a waste of money?

does anyone know the dealer?

thanks!

I think you could piece one together from one offs for a whole lot less.

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco
58 - Slingerland Krupa Deluxe
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 22 (need), 13, 16
And some others..

He is member of this forum. And my understanding is he is all quality. However, as G D stated, you can probably do better piecemeal on ebay or CL, unless you actually like the satin flame. It's hard to match something like satin flame, unless you are very patient. Or someone is parting one.

Unless you are adverse to ebay, then you'll do better there. Dealers tend to have nicer pieces (although not always the case that you don't see them on ebay), cleaned up and ready, etc. So you pay more.

There was a possibility recently to put together a blue satin flame RB kit, but the floor tom now sold. You can still get the snare, ride and kick and I bet for a deal because seller doesn't know anything about drums (although NB the bass is missing the badge and they are costly since they are always getting lost, but you'll have to look for floor tom, which I can tell you from personal experience...sucks.

PM me and I'll give you the link if you are interested. Snare alone properly sold and in decent shape is the price for all 3 at the moment.

I concur. That's a price for a Gretsch kit in superb condition, in a nice wrap.

You could pick up a whole kit on eFlay for about $1500 or so...just take a look at how Gretsch is NOT selling these days:

http://completed.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=gretsch+drum+set&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=See-All-Categories&_okw=gretsch+drum+set&_oexkw=&LH_Complete=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=200&_fpos=Zip+code&_fsct=&LH_SALE_CURRENCY=0&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_rdc=1

This is a "least-sought-after" finish in mediocre to poor aesthetic condition...

...this one is overpriced a good $750-1000 there...but then again, a vintage drum retailer will try for those kinda prices.

Bill from classic vintage drums is a fair vintage drum dealer. One of the good guys!

If you do not have to have a 14" floor and are looking for round badge Gretsch email me if interested in the following 20/13/16:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270460153142&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

I will take less for it not to relist and if not paid for through feebay or slaypal. US postal money order or bank wire transfer for cheaper price.

email direct:fltgrycleav@yahoo

Peace, Gary

BTW....I don't think anyone was casting aspersions on the merchant. It's common knowledge that legit vintage retailers sell their stuff significantly higher than what the second-hand C'list/eFlay market bears....that's all. ;)

Ok the 12/14 requirement is a new development.

There was a 12/14/20 that was on ebay in champagne sparkle about a month ago. All good save that the 12 ride tom had two holes from a cymbal addition or something. No snare.

It sat for 7 days a $1650 without a bid. Someone put in a snipe and got it at the opening price 2 secs before the auction end.

Given that a 14" floor tom in very nice condition is a nearly a $1000 drum, not a bad deal.

I'd say wait.

It's usually better (and I've been doing this for nearly 20 years) to get a set that came together and matches, than it is to try and "piece together" a set.

You can look forever to find a same color 14" floor tom as the easier drums you find...and even if it's the same finish as the other drums, it still may not match perfectly.

Gretsch singles in original condition are hard to find. 14" FTs are even harder. As are Gretsch basses without extra holes.

If you're looking for a nice, complete Gretsch set in 12 20 14 sizes, and you find one at a retail price, and you don't want to wait forever or get a "problem" set, go to a reputable dealer and fork over the #.

The set in your link is a decent deal...not a steal, but a fair value. And the dealer is top notch.
