Go ahead, Name My Drum.....

I have this snare drum that has been lamenting in a case here in my basement for many years. It was the snare drum I first began playing in '71 or '72, my brother also took lessons on it in the late 60s when he was in elementary school. I think it may have even been used when my parents bought it, so it's at least 40 years old. The strainer has 'Japan' stamped on it and on one of the rims it also says 'made in Japan' There is a capital letter 'R' stamped into the other rim. The drum came with a light duty Beverley stand which I also still have. It's a 5 1/2 x14 wood shell, 6 lug, blue sparkle finish. No badge, no other markings anywhere I can see.

Duh on my part, didn't see the non-USA cat. Is there an Admin in the house?

Japanese stencil...I had one labeled VIBRA which was identical to this one. But heck, that don't mean anything conclusive...could have been badged/labeled a lot of different stencil names, really....

This is a Pearl stencil. I have one drum that is a Pearl that has the same lug style. It is an early one from the looks of the strainer. If you want to part with it, let me know. PM sent.

Hi,The lugs on the snare were also used on CROWN drums made by pearl from about 1965-71,shell could be a 3 ply with rings or 5 ply with-out rings..Some of the crown drums did not have badges on them,if it had a badge crowns were big long silver ones with black letters reading crown..mikey

I agree- a Pearl stencil- hard to date exactly- something like 1970 I suspect.

How`s the shell inside when you take off the heads, is the wood clean and in good cond? That chrome would polish up almost like new with a paste of baking soda/water scrubbed with a soft toothbrush- almost no rust I can see there, just tarnish. I would open it up, polish the hoops and lugs, oil the tension bolts and slap new heads on there. After all that, that drum will be ready to sing again.
