Gigging with Vintage Drum Throne

Loading...

Does anyone gig with a vintage drum throne? I am looking for a light weight throne and wonder if a vintage throne would be comfortable enough to use regularly.

Poetman,

Yes and no. I have a 70’s Ludwig Atlas throne, the kind with swivel feet and each leg is the same. It has a cheap foam pad under vinyl for the business end of the seat. Not in any imagination is it comfortable, but is lightweight, which is great for geezers such as myself. I use a folded towel between my bony butt and the seat, but use a modern, heavy throne for any gig longer than 90 minutes.

Thanks! I had a slightly vintage Gibraltar, but the seat was so hard and stiff, I got rid of it. I currently use a Tama Titan, which is comfortable, but it’s heavy—probably 12–13lbs! The seat top also has a little play which I don’t know got to stabilize

I have a few vintage drum thrones I have used that date between the late 1950s and the early 1980s. They are all the standard type fold-up thrones that stores sold along with all of the major drum brands. They all have a lightly-padded round or oval seat that fits on top of the base. After I retired from playing and began collecting, I acquired a couple of canister thrones--a Rogers and a Ludwig. They were both fairly comfortable. But, the diameter of the seating area was too small and the throne was too tall to be very comfortable. So, my friend Jim Petty custom built one for me with a 14" diameter and a double-thick padded seat and a total height more suited for my height. I think that this throne would be a very cushy driver's seat for a long gig. This throne is so comfy that I sold or traded off the Ludwig and Rogers canisters for some choice vintage drums. Here's a photo of the custom throne next to the Ludwig throne. The throne weighs about the same as a 14x14 floor tom. If I was packing in or out for a gig, taking the throne in it's fibre case would be like taking a second floor tom. OK... So, it's not vintage. But I am.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Footnotes to my canister throne post...I found the case on eBay for under $30 delivered. The Champagne Sparkle wrap could always be changed to another wrap if I wanted a match for whichever drum set I was playing. But, leaving the champagne wrap alone doesn't bother me.
