getting more resonance out of my floortom

Loading...

hi,

after dealing with the rattling i also tried to get a little more resonance out of my rb 14x14 floor tom. compared to the rack tom it sounds a little flat...

i tried: coated ambassadors on both sides, renaissance ambassadors on both sides and and renaissance ambassador as batter and renaissance diplomat as reso.

would it make sense to put some felt or rubber between the leg-mounts and the shell?

thanks,

Maybe, but a bigger help is the Pearl air suspension tips or whatever they call them. For about $11 you can buy a pack of 3, swap them on your floor tom legs and voila..Clapping Happy2

You can accomplish the same thing as those with four pieces of foam rubber set under the leg tips.....or...don't ask me why they work different than any other brand......you can get a set of Ludwig floor tom legs. I have a generic set that appear to be bent almost exactly the same as Ludwig's but they aren't exactly the same. Those sound dead when I use them. Swap the set of Ludwigs on and voila! Resonance! It must be that the angles are more pronounced on the Ludwig's than the generics. If DW's legs were smaller diameter, they'd work too....but they won't fit the Gretsch mounts, too large a diameter. Those are even more sharply bent and they claim they did that to promote resonance without having to go to a RIMS mount system on their floor toms. Its all about the angle....and I know that factory Gretsch from the RB and SSB eras are almost straight.

I have seen a generic version of the DW's in 3/8" size, but I don't remember where..

that was right on the money.

it does not look so vintage but it made the drum sing!

thanks.

i also tried styrfoam balls which worked too, but the legs ate through it in no time.

I just picked up a set of Gibraltar floating tips for my RB floor tom... there's a guy selling them on eBay for about $6.50. I'll try 'em out this weekend and report back.
