Getting grime/dirt off a COB

Loading...

Hey y'all,

I'm in the process of cleaning my Super Ludwig after I got it. It had been sitting on a garage shelf for probably 30 or 40 years and had developed a fair bit of grime.

Most of it came off, but there is a grime/dirt/something ring around the shell under where the rims were and I for the life of me cannot get it off. I cannot figure out what will take this stuff off. Any ideas for something that might be abrasive enough to take it off, without scratching the shell?

The ring around the shell you're describing, is that both batter and reso sides and is that just below the shell edge?

If so it may simply be a bit of erosion from the drum head's aluminum hoop, or worse case scenario some of the chrome has rubbed off and you're seeing some of the nickel plating.

Have you tried any metal polish on it yet?

Completely forgot to attach the pictures. (I've shined it up real nice to a mirror finish so you're treated to a lovely picture of my hand and phone as well.)

I've tried everything I could think of, short of steel wool (Never!). With the main cleaning being done with some Bon Ami and basically my hand.

The drum did not have a head on it when I got it, and I assume it has been that way for the duration of the 30 or 40 years it sat on that shelf.

+3, it wear. Completely preventable too but someone didn't. I talk about rod splay a lot and one thing it does is pull the head ring to the shell. tuning it scrapes.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

On one hand gosh darn it. I know y'all are right but I don't want to believe that I can't remove it (despite knowing it'll be invisible when the drumhead/rim is on)

On the other hand, well it was still a free Super Ludwig, so I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.
