I was wondering around the dining room at the nursing home rehab I am in right now for injuries from an accident.......

Saw some CDs laying on top of a pile of magazines.....top hits of the 60s, something else, and a CD called (and this shocked me!)

Gene Krupa - Big Bands Legends - The Best Of

Grabbed it and threw it in my computer - listening to a bit of it now.....but might as well ask......

What are his best songs showcasing his drumming prowess?

(Wondering if the answers here are included on this CD)

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Read about your accident, but missed the part about you being in rehab. How long are you expected to be there? Sorry to hear it.

Enjoy that cd. Should be some good stuff on there.

I like his Benny Goodman & Woody Hermann years.... Guess by now you've played it all anyhow...

I spotted a GK cd at a country market a couple of years ago ... I think I paid the princely sum of only 1 or 2 bucks for it and was feeling guilty... But when I went to pay for it, the seller asked me who was GK... I gave him an education...

Hope your foot is well on the mend..

John

I've never been disappointed by anything I've heard from Gene. Though I do also prefer his Benny Goodman years. To me ( and I'm sure to many ) he is the father of the modern drum set, and the man who brought us and our instrument to the forefront. My Grandmother had the privilege of seeing him in those years. Has compared me to him a few times, but I doubt I'm that good, lol

Drummerjohn333 - sorry to hear about your accident.

Oh man...sorry to hear about your accident. I do hope you're OK.

Being a huge fan, I've always thought his playing best showcases his prowess..but you can't go wrong with things like the Benny Goodman at Carnegie Hall recordings, or Gene Krupa at The London House.

Then there's the Big Noise From Winnetka album....or songs like "Dark Eyes" (My absolute favorite) or "Petit Fleur"

The beauty of it all is, the more you dig, the more you find.

Good luck!!

A sincere Thanks for the well wishes....asphalt hauling belly dump trailer (pulled by semi truck) backed into me, hit me in the back (I was facing the other way) - I had to get up and out of the way as fast as I could. Got out of the way, except my left foot, and right leg from the knee on down. Crushed my left foot, severe sprain, but no perceivable fractures. Right foot (BD player) was crushed a bit but not nearly as bad....no sprain. Right leg (tibia/fibula) were both clean broken, open fracture. Now I have a titanium rod inside my tibia held in by 4 screws.

So blessed I was not paralyzed or killed - which would have happened if it hit me anywhere else. The trailer weighed 80,000 - which calculates to about 4000 pounds on each wheel - 6 wheels ran over me.

I have been in rehab for over 3 weeks now. Docs say I should pretty much make a full recovery....hoping they are right and asking alot of questions so as to prevent long term chronic pain. Alot of conditioning involved in recovery - hope my right foot (BD) will recovery to be as fast as it once was.

Have not had a chance to listen attentively to the Gene Krupa yet. "Dark Eyes" & "Petit Fleur" are NOT on this CD. I do not know when this material was recorded and who all was in the band. No CD insert or even a case - CD only. The only Benny Goodman song I have is "King Porter Stomp". - did Gene drum on this?

Here's the artist list for King Porter Stomp... Gene joined in 1934 and stayed a few years.. If you use the CD code you can more than likely print the cover notes..

Cheers

John

So glad you are ok man! Something really similar happened to my father back in 2006 except it was with a train. He was working at Shell Oil company for their railroad and didn't hear a group of cars coming down a track slowly... walked diagonally across one of the rails in the yard and got hit from behind. No stopping train cars! So he started rolling to get off the track and he made it.. except for his foot. He lost 3 toes on his right foot and crushed the arch, tore a ligament in his knee and broke the pelvis. Thank goodness he wasn't killed. He's made a full recovery and I'm certain you will do the same!! Best wishes to you.

There's also a CD call the "Platinum Collection" which has early and later stuff from Gene's career. I can burn a copy and send it to you if you like. At least 2 discs maybe more. I'll need to dig it out and see. Can copy the playlist for you also. Lemme know! Glad recovery is going well.

Glenn.

Wow just saw this now. I broke my tib/fib over Labor Day weekend at my buddy's camp.(09/2015). I as well have the titanium metal rod from my knee down with plates and screws in my heal. I was taken to the hospital but due to how bad the swealing was the surgeon had to put a external fix on me. I went for my second surgery two weeks later and that's when they put the rod and plates in. It's my my left foot ( hi hat foot ) so I am still able to play but really haven't felt like it since the accident. I've been very tired and on a ton of pain pills. I am doing better and hope to return to work in a month. I hope that you recover quickly John!
